Milan Iloski sits as his future with San Diego FC remains up in the air

One of San Diego FC’s top players was held out of Saturday’s match due to his uncertain future with the club.
Escondido native Milan Iloski, who entered the match as the team leader in goals with 10, did not play in SDFC’s 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field.
Coach Mikey Varas said he sat Iloski because of his contract status. Denmark’s FC Nordsjaelland loaned Iloski to SDFC in April after San Diego forward Marcus Ingvartsen suffered a serious leg injury. The loan is set to expire at the end of July.
“It’s simple. His loan is expiring and we haven’t come to an agreement, although we’ve been working on that,” Varas said postgame. “So I decided to prioritize the players that are 100% going to be here for the rest of the season.”
Anders Dreyer scored twice, leapfrogging Iloski for the team scoring lead, as San Diego FC won its fourth consecutive road match and remained at the top of Major League Soccer’s Western Conference standings. SDFC (13-6-3) returns to Snapdragon Stadium on Wednesday night for a match against Toronto FC (4-11-6).
It has been a happy homecoming for Iloski, who grew up in Escondido and starred at UCLA and for Orange County SC of USL Championship before heading overseas.
Iloski was held scoreless in his first two matches with SDFC, then got on the board in a May 3 win over FC Dallas. He logged his second goal a week later against St. Louis City SC, then scored once against Austin FC on May 31 and twice in a June 14 win over Minnesota United.
On June 25, Iloski etched his name in club history. Making his first career start, the forward scored four goals in a 5-3 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps. All four of Iloski’s scores came during a 12-minute span: he found the net in the 35th, 37th, 44th and 47th minutes.
Not only did Iloski log the first hat trick (three goals or more) in SDFC history, he became just the 20th player in the 30-year history of MLS to score four or more goals in a game. Iloski started SDFC’s next two matches, playing 89 and 90 minutes, respectively, before sitting on Saturday.
The player Iloski replaced, Ingvartsen, returned to SDFC’s lineup on June 1 but hasn’t played since June 15 because of a lower-body issue. It’s unclear if Ingvartsen reaggravated his initial injury or if the latest ailment is new.
