Shaunae Miller-Uibo, two-time Olympic champion in the women’s 400 meters (m) event, has been sidelined with a leg injury since the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, but she could return to action by June, according to her father and coach Shaun Miller.
“We are hopeful that her first race may be in June. I am going to be extremely patient and ensure that her health comes first, because sometimes the competitor in her can be a handful,” he shared.
The four-time Bahamian Olympian had her first encounter with the leg injury in the 200m heats at the 2024 Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations’ (BAAA) Kids Athletics Invitational, Junior and Senior National Championships last June.
She was unable to finish that event and failed to compete in the 400m final despite advancing through the heats.
Miller-Uibo still managed to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games through the World Athletics Rankings system, which put her in position to defend her title in the women’s 400m event.
The 31-year-old quarter-miler had an unfortunate occurrence when she re-aggravated her leg injury about 200m into the women’s 400m heats in Paris, France.
Her 400m Olympic title defense came to an end in the repêchage round of the 400m event, where she ran 53.50 seconds. She was clearly not her usual self, finishing the event in seventh place.
Prior to the BAAA nationals at home, Miller-Uibo made her season debut at the 2024 BTC World Athletics Relays. She ran alongside Olympians Steven Gardiner, Alonzo Russell and Shania Adderley. She looked strong, and the quartet ran a national record time of 3:12.81.
Since then, Miller-Uibo has dealt with reoccurring injuries.
“Since her injury following the World Relays 2024 home in The Bahamas, the road to recovery was a difficult one. At nationals, we were unaware that she had already qualified for the [Olympics] games, so we attempted to give an effort with only three days of training and that is when we sustained a very serious injury. Since Paris, a lot has taken place, but presently, she’s back in training, and Shaunae is excited about this upcoming season,” her father/coach explained.
Miller-Uibo last experienced global victory at the 2022 World Athletics Outdoor Championships, in Eugene, Oregon. She emerged as the women’s 400m champion, clocking 49.11 seconds.
The four-time Diamond League champion ran a season’s best time of 51.83 seconds to win the women’s 400m event nearly two years ago at the 2023 Weltklasse Zürich outdoor meet in Zürich, Switzerland.
With the 2025 World Athletics Championships set for September in Tokyo, Japan, her father confirmed that if all goes well, she will make a push for the global event.
“We will wait to see how the first set of races go, and then at some point, we will heat up the training to be ready for the world championships in September,” he told The Nassau Guardian.
He added that mentally his daughter is a “champion” and he will have the task of trying to slow her down until later in the season.
Miller-Uibo is gearing up to make another potentially iconic run, but the goal is to get fully healthy first.
