Millions of Brits now living a 'green' lifestyle - but say more action is needed
@Source: mirror.co.uk
According to recent research the most popular eco-friendly practices Brits are adopting to cut back on their carbon footprint include using reusable bags, switching to LED bulbs and energy-saving appliances. Additionally, a third are opting for sustainable fashion brands over fast fashion as part of their commitment to a greener lifestyle. In terms of home improvements, 79% keep an eye on their energy usage, with 43% having made upgrades to boost energy efficiency. This could involve switching to a green energy provider or installing renewable energy sources. However, despite these efforts, two-thirds feel they could still do more to bolster their eco-credentials. Nine in ten believe they could save money by only boiling the amount of water they need, turning off appliances on standby and switching off lights in empty rooms. Yet, some Brits still have reservations as nearly half think some eco-improvements are too costly, while 19% say some options are too inconvenient. These findings come as part of Scottish Gas' collaboration with Scotland Rugby to tackle carbon emissions, with plans afoot to decarbonise Scottish Gas Murrayfield, Scotland's largest clubhouse. As stated in the report, in addition to exploring environmentally friendly choices at home, 55% of polled individuals believe international sports teams have a responsibility to set a good example by adopting more energy-efficient practices. In line with this, Scottish Gas and Murrayfield have formed a partnership to support rugby clubs across Scotland in minimising their carbon footprint and lowering their energy bills through the Club and Community Net Zero Fund. This initiative allows clubs nationwide to receive grants to fund energy-efficient upgrades while providing targeted guidance on decreasing carbon emissions. By doing so, it assists local communities in meeting the Scottish Government's goal of achieving Net Zero by 2045. The Murrayfield estate plans to implement a series of energy-saving measures in three stages, including installing panoramic power sensors and LED lighting controls, while promoting behavioural changes among staff. Former Scotland international Tommy Seymour noted: "There’s more emphasis on energy saving across society than ever. "Sport can be a great vehicle to inspire change, so it’s brilliant that we’re tackling carbon emissions at Scottish Gas Murrayfield and helping communities across Scotland become more energy efficient.” TOP ECO-FRIENDLY WAYS BRITS ARE REDUCING THEIR CARBON FOOTPRINT: Using reusable shopping bags, cups, and bottles Using LED bulbs and energy-saving appliances Monitoring my energy usage at home Reducing plastic waste by avoiding single-use plastics Walking or cycling instead of driving Making my home more energy-efficient (e.g., insulation, double glazing) Repairing items instead of replacing them Composting food scraps and garden waste Swapping disposable products for reusable alternatives Buying second-hand clothes instead of new Avoiding fast fashion and choosing sustainable brands Using public transport more often Buying locally produced food to cut down on food miles Growing my own fruit, vegetables, or herbs Eating less meat or adopting a plant-based diet Never flying or reducing air travel Switching to a renewable energy provider Ditching my car or driving less Switching to an electric or hybrid vehicle Shopping at zero waste stores
