Mindanao has emerged as an unexpected powerhouse in junior golf, a region once overlooked by the sport’s elite circles, all thanks to a bold initiative by the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines (JGFP). The foundation’s comprehensive approach has ignited a new passion for the game in the area and sparked a ripple effect that has captured the attention of golf organizations nationwide. The JGFP’s decision to invest heavily in developing junior golf in underserved regions, such as Mindanao, has been a game-changer. What was once a sport reserved for a select few in the capital city soon blossomed into a nationwide movement. The foundation launched local tournaments, training camps and scholarship programs, providing young golfers from all walks of life with opportunities to pursue their dreams on the green. The results have been nothing short of extraordinary, with children from all corners of Mindanao rising to prominence and competing in national events that once seemed beyond reach. This unparalleled investment in the next generation didn’t just have an impact locally. .The success of the JGFP’s programs quickly garnered attention from other golf organizations around the country. Inspired by the foundation’s efforts, these groups began launching their series of junior tournaments, creating a vibrant and competitive circuit that gives more young players the chance to develop their skills and compete at higher levels.Mindanao has now found itself at the forefront of junior golf in the Philippines, with local talent regularly outperforming their peers from other regions. However, this story is not just about numbers and victories; it’s about the culture the JGFP has cultivated. The foundation has fostered an environment that goes beyond developing technical skill, emphasizing values like dedication, teamwork, and an enduring passion for the game. It’s a place where young golfers aren’t merely trained to compete — they are nurtured to grow as individuals, learning to embrace the integrity and camaraderie that golf embodies.Like any organization, the JGFP has faced its challenges, but under the leadership of businessman Oliver Gan, it has remained focused and steadfast in pursuing the goals set at the beginning of his term. One such goal is the highly anticipated JGFP Interclub, which will take a major step forward next week by going international. The event will feature teams from golf powerhouses Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam..This tournament is a historic moment for junior golf in the Philippines, as the JGFP opens its doors to the world, offering Filipino junior golfers the chance to compete against some of the best young players in Asia. It’s not just another competition — it’s a bold declaration that the Philippines, once a quiet observer in the global golf scene, is now an active participant with a growing presence. It stands as a testament to the hard work, vision, and investment poured into developing the sport for the next generation.Consistent with its goals and objectives, the JGFP formed a team made up of Mindanao players. They are Adrian Bisera and AJ Wacan of Davao City, Rainer Tigwalan of General Santos City, and Mhark Fernando III of Zamboanga City.Del Monte and Brittannika also formed and bankrolled teams for the three-day event presented by East West Bank. The battleground is the Acacia course of the Mimosa Plus Golf and Country Club, which features well-bunkered fairways, elevated greens, and strategically-placed water hazards. The event will spotlight the incredible talent emerging from Mindanao, where young golfers have been empowered by the JGFP’s tireless efforts. As the world turns its attention to the Philippines for this exciting event, it’s clear that the impact of the JGFP will be felt for years to come. Their vision has propelled Philippine junior golf into a new era. With this momentum, the future of the sport in the country has never looked brighter. This is only the beginning.
