A new ablution block funded entirely by the Fijian government has been officially commissioned as part of the country’s first celebration of World Rural Development Day, marking a significant investment in rural sanitation and public health. The $31,400 project was announced by Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Sakiasi Ditoka, who stressed the importance of improving access to clean water and sanitation in rural communities. “This facility directly supports our mission to reduce health risks and improve quality of life in our rural areas,” Mr Ditoka said. The commissioning is part of a broader four-day observance of World Rural Development Day, newly recognized by the United Nations and held annually on July 6. The day commemorates the 1979 establishment of CIRDAP and underscores the importance of rural development in achieving global goals. Under the theme “Elevating Rural Voices,” Fiji’s programme includes public outreach, media campaigns, and a national dialogue on rural development. Events will continue throughout the weekend, culminating with a Ministry statement in local newspapers on Sunday. “This day is more than symbolic—it’s a reminder that sustainable development must start where the needs are greatest,” Mr Ditoka added. He also highlighted previous investments in rural infrastructure, such as footbridges, solar lighting, and livelihood support projects, and reaffirmed government support for development schemes like the Rural Housing Assistance Programme and Self-Help Programme. “We are committed to ensuring that rural and maritime communities are not left behind,” he said. “We will continue to push for inclusive, community-led growth across the nation.” Feedback: sosiveta.korobiau@fijisun.com.fj
