Mo Salah teases Florian Wirtz's Liverpool squad number but Reds team-mate won't like it

Mohamed Salah has joked that Florian Wirtz will take the No.8 Liverpool shirt number off Dominik Szoboszlai after making his British-record move to Anfield. Last week the German's move from Bayer Leverkusen was announced with the Reds striking a deal worth £116million. Wirtz is tipped as one of Europe's most exciting prospect and in recent years has worn No 8 for the German side. Wirtz has recently worn 10 for the Bundesliga outfit and in his recent outing for Germany he wore No 17. However Salah has teased the potential for the 22-year-old to be given No 8, which would see Szoboszlai stripped of the number after two years at Liverpool. An Instagram post has hinted that an announcement is incoming with Salah commenting that he is set for the No 8 whilst tagging his Hungarian team-mate. Taking the number from Szoboszlai, who started 29 of the club's Premier League games last season, would be a blow and potentially hint at him falling down the pecking order. It remains to be seen how Arne Slot will use Wirtz with Szoboszlai among those who could lose out. The Hungarian has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and several months ago it was reported that Al-Hilal would offer big sums to tempt Liverpool into selling their midfielder. However Szoboszlai has a long-term contract and has no interest in leaving the club. Liverpool boss Arne Slot has already detailed to Wirtz where he sees him fitting into the XI with the Dutchman presenting some of the scenarios where the new signing can add value. Wirtz told the club's website : "The conversations were always really good. I can remember the first time, he already showed me some scenes of how we want to play and how I could fit in the team. He was just telling me that I'm a player he really wants to have in his team and can bring the team a step forward. I just could imagine it [being] good to be in the team and to make it better because I have to make my performances every week – but I'm here for this." On his own personal qualities he added: "The people say I'm a creative player, and I hope I can bring this creativity to the team and also the joy on the pitch. I try to make assists, goals and run for the team to defend. I hope I can just make the team one step better." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
