Two six-year-old twins died after a tree fell on their home during a violent New York tornado on Sunday, June 22.
The EF-1 tornado took place in the early hours of Sunday in Clark Mills, a hamlet of Oneida County, N.Y., according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.
In a statement, the department said that the tornado had peak winds of 105 mph that ravaged through many structures and trees.
One of the structures that was damaged was the home of Kayleigh Bisson and her twin daughters, Emily and Kenni Bisson. Neighbor Jared Bowman told Syracuse.com that the family had moved into the rental home just a few months ago.
The home was destroyed after a tree nearly 3 feet in diameter crashed through the two-story property, landing on the first floor where Kayleigh was with her girls, according to the outlet.
The Oneida County Sheriff's Office said in a press release that they received a call from someone who reported that "the roof collapsed onto her, causing her to become temporarily entrapped, and she was unable to locate her two daughters."
Bowman said that when he ran next door to help Kayleigh escape through a window, all she could think about was her kids.
"She was yelling, 'Get my kids out!' But there was no noise. It felt very eerie and bad," he recalled. She was eventually helped out by another neighbor, Rick Carollo, who had to climb a tree to get her out, he told Syracuse.com.
Upon further investigation, Emily and Kenni were found inside the residence and were pronounced dead at the scene, said the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office also noted a separate incident that happened the same day in which a tree fell on the home of Shelly Johnson, who also died. Johnson was 50.
According to Syracuse.com, Emily and Kenni were first-graders at Clinton Elementary School.
Clinton Central School District Superintendent Christopher M. Clancy confirmed their deaths in a statement, explaining that "a severe weather emergency in our community resulted in the tragic loss of life, including two of our elementary students."
"Our hearts are with all of the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy," his statement continued, noting that trained counselors and support staff would be available.
A GoFundMe created to help honor Emily and Kenni states that they "were very popular in their small town for their enthusiasm, laughter and most of all their smiles to everyone in the community."
"They were apart of softball, soccer, dance, gymnastics and so much more. They always kept everyone smiling and made people remember what life was all about. They walked through life smiling, dancing, and belly laughs that lasted for days," the campaign adds.
