Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who celebrated Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) IPL title win in Ahmedabad just a day earlier, expressed profound sorrow on Thursday over the tragic stampede outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
‘My and Akshata’s hearts go out to everyone who has lost loved ones or been hurt in the tragic events in Bengaluru,’ Sunak posted on X, referring to his wife Akshata Murty, daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy. ‘We celebrated with you yesterday and we mourn with you today”.
The tragedy occurred during the RCB victory parade in Bengaluru, where thousands gathered to celebrate the team’s first-ever IPL title. Harrowing visuals showed paramedics rushing the injured on stretchers and police officers carrying unconscious spectators, including children. In one viral video, a woman was seen administering CPR to an unresponsive man.

According to official sources, 11 people died, and at least 33 others were hospitalised. Seven of the deaths occurred at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital and four at Vaidehi Hospital on Mallya Road.
Just hours before the incident, Sunak had joined the celebrations at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, cheering RCB’s historic win over Punjab Kings. Photos and videos showed him applauding enthusiastically from the stands alongside Akshata Murty. ‘This is incredible, this is absolutely electric… I have never experienced cricket like this,’ he said in a brief interview at the venue.
Earlier that day, Sunak had posted a picture from the stands on X with the caption ‘Let’s go’, tagging the team’s official handle. While he did not share a celebratory post after the match, images of him cheering enthusiastically were widely circulated on social media.
