MS Dhoni Or Rohit Sharma? Tom Moody Picks No.1 Captain In IPL History

India legend MS Dhoni has been hailed as the greatest captain in the history of the Indian Premier League by former Australia cricketer and Tom Moody. Dhoni captained Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles before stepping away from the leadership role ahead of last season. However, he returned to the helm of affairs after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out midway through the ongoing season due to an elbow fracture.
Moody placed Dhoni as his greatest IPL captain, looking past Mumbai Indians great Rohit Sharma for the numero uno spot.
While Dhoni and Rohit have bagged the coveted IPL crown five times each as captains, Moody ranks the CSK great a notch higher.
“MS Dhoni, I think keeps the No.1 spot because of the number of trophies but also the fact that he’s head squads that haven’t been the strongest in the tournament,” Moody said.
Dhoni’s CSK endured a forgettable, finishing at the bottom of the standings for the first time in their history.
Dhoni’s reluctance to move up the order to resolve the lack of stability in the batting order also came under criticism.
The 43-year-old looked a pale shadow of his best, making just 196 runs in 14 innings.
Even Dhoni’s midas touch as captain couldn’t help CSK.
They won only 4 games and suffered their first-ever bottom-place finish in IPL history.
Asked to blind rank big-name IPL captains, Moody initially placed former Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper Virat Kohli at No.5, the legend taking the popular franchise to the final once in 2016 and to the playoffs four times in 2015, 2016, 2020 and 2021 editions of the league.
Going through calculations in his head, Moody ranked former Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir third for taking the side to twin IPL trophies in 2012 and 2014.
Moody also picked Punjab Kings’ Shreyas Iyer as the fourth-best IPL captain.
Iyer had taken KKR to their third IPL crown last season before moving to the PBKS camp.
At sixth, the Aussie veteran named his countryman and Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins.
