'My own way' - Bruno Fernandes responds to Roy Keane Manchester United captaincy jibes

Bruno Fernandes is using recent criticism from Roy Keane as fuel to try and prove the former Manchester United captain wrong, but insists he will be true to himself in the role. Keane slammed Fernandes last month despite the 30-year-old's outstanding displays this season, the latest of which saw him score a hat-trick in a 4-1 win against Real Sociedad, booking a Europa League quarter-final tie with Lyon. That took Fernandes to 15 goals and 13 assists in 43 games this season, a remarkable record in a team having a poor season, but that wasn't enough for Keane as he took aim at the Portuguese recently. Keane said "talent is not enough" when it comes to Fernandes and added he is "not a fighter". Fernandes said the former Old Trafford skipper was entitled to his opinion and he had plenty of respect for him, but doesn't intend to change how he goes about the job. "Everyone has an opinion and that's fine. I can't change the mind of people. Like everything I have to do is go on the pitch and try to do the best I can for the club," he said. "Roy Keane was an amazing captain for the club, one of the best, as everyone says. I didn't have the chance to see much from him, only last few years, but he was a great player that won everything for the club. He's massively respected from everyone and has all my respect. He has to give his opinion and this is what he thinks about me. "What I’m doing on the pitch [is] to try to change his mind, or trying to do something that he probably sees as a good thing. Obviously, I do it in my own way, I don't want to copy anyone. "I try to be the best captain that I can for my teammates, I try to help everyone in the best way I can and the best way I know. I have a lot of things to improve, not only as a captain but as a player, as a person, as a human being, and that's fine. Criticism is going to be always part and it's going to make me grow and understand that there's still a long way to go." Fernandes certainly impressed on the pitch again in the destruction of Real Sociedad, scoring two penalties and then finishing the game off when he latched on to an Alejandro Garnacho pass and slammed a finish past Alex Remiro. But he played down the idea this had been the best performance so far under Ruben Amorim. "I wouldn't say it was the best performance, obviously the result [was good]. At this club it's all about results," he said. "We want to perform, we want to do the best we can, we want to win games but you know that you're going to be judged by the results and that's that's always a difficult thing at this club. "But if you want to be here this is the demand and this is what I like. I like to have a big demand. I want to play under a lot of pressure because that means that you have reached a big level so if you have that demand, if you have that pressure, you've made it a long way."
