My Saturday with Donncha O'Callaghan: Mum made sure we stayed really tight after my dad died
@Source: irishexaminer.com
My buddy Mike Russell has a class in Echo Athletics so I jump into that. Some days you might not have the motivation but it’s enough just to turn up. When you’re self motivated it can be harder to bring the energy — that’s one of the things I miss about rugby — you don’t have to bring the energy every day but on the days you have it you have to share it. I’ve started doing yoga in Hot Yoga Cork and I do a bit of running with Happy Feet Run Club. I would eat every minute of the day if I could... like a Hobbit, bar the hairy feet. If I am training I’ll have something like an Alpro high protein shake. I’ve learned what works for me having made mistakes and followed different fads. It works for me if I’m fuelled right. Saturdays can be chaotic. On a Thursday evening myself and my wife Jenny sit down and plan it all out and then it’s like: ‘Have a great weekend — see you on Sunday for dinner!’. We’ll start ferrying everyone around to rugby, running and hockey. It’s a logistical nightmare and Jenny is all over it, I just do what I’m told. At some point we’ll all meet up with the dog and with ex-teammates and friends, try to be sociable and acknowledge that it’s Saturday before we go off ferrying people places again. We might meet at the market outside Douglas village or go to the Natural Foods Bakery or the Cameron Bakery in Blackrock. We resisted getting a dog for ages but Shadow, our black labrador, is the best thing that ever happened us — his emotional intelligence is off the charts. There’s normally good rugby on Saturday afternoons in Cork Con or UCC. My kids love to come to Con as it’s their club too and they love to get a feel for it (as well as a fizzy drink). I still have to keep an eye on the rugby for work but if I’m trying to enjoy my Saturday I want to get emotionally involved. When I’m working it’s different — I’ll record the matches and analyse them later. We go to mass at 6pm in St. Columba’s in Douglas. If you make a decision to get involved with baptisms, communions and confirmations, I think you’ve got to buy in a bit too. Obviously the kids can make up their own minds in time but my mum always set good standards for me. The kids will pick up a Saturday treat to have after dinner. We love to have steak and chips for Saturday night dinner. My family is very important to me. When my dad passed away, aged 40, my mum was left with five kids aged five to 16. She made sure we stayed really tight. In a rugby environment, if you really want to be successful, you have to treat your teammates like family. I think it is often overlooked in sport, but I believe success is linked with people that care about each other. There was a time when I could have told you every gig going but now I’m more likely to be able to tell you that WWE is coming or that we need to get tickets to Sabrina Carpenter. I’m at that point where, thankfully, I have to be a little selfless about my own life and I’m looking out for my family. I’ve never really touched alcohol, so I’ll be just as happy with a cup of tea and a biscuit as a glass of wine. We’ll watch whatever series is a talking point. I’m absolutely bet into Love Island at the moment. This time of the year, it’s like trying to get a cat into a bath trying to get the kids into bed. They’ll be out in the garden with hurleys and sliotars and I’ll be in goal. I’ll start heading to bed around 10.30pm. I never considered myself a reader, but my favourite thing is reading books with my kids at bedtime — it’s really about spending time together and I think it provides a bit of glue that’s important. Donncha O’Callaghan has teamed up with Alpro High Protein for their Summer of Running series in partnership with Happy Feet Run Club. Free run clubs will take place on July 12 and 26, and August 9 and 23. Runners will receive free Alpro High Protein samples at the end of each 5km run. See @happyfeetdublin
