With one day to go before the National Budget announcement Maciu Nalumisa is optimistic that more funds will be allocated to tackle Fiji’s growing housing challenges.
The Minister for Housing and Local Government said key priorities include addressing informal settlements, stopping forced evictions and helping more Fijians own homes.
“One of the biggest issues we’re facing is the rise in eviction cases and the need to manage informal settlements, especially in towns and areas outside city boundaries,” Mr Nalumisa said yesterday.
“We’re working on identifying land so we can develop before relocating affected families.”
The ministry has requested more funding to help agencies like the Housing Authority and PRB (Public Rental Board) build more model homes and sell more lots.
The goal is to make housing more affordable, especially for low-income families.
Mr Nalumisa is also hopeful the Ministry of Finance will expand the First Home Assistance Programme, to increase support for people earning below $30,000 annually. This will help more Fijians buy land and homes.
Local councils also need extra funding to improve garbage collection and services in growing residential areas.
“Rural areas where informal settlements are common, must not be left behind,” he said.
“Now we just hope the Ministry of Finance will consider our requests and provide the support needed.”
Mr Nalumisa emphasised that getting the Budget right would be crucial to solving long-standing housing issues and giving every Fijian a safe place to call home.
