NAPOLEON – The Napoleon girls soccer program picked up the first postseason win in program history on Thursday, beating Brighton Charyl Stockwell Prep 6-3 in a pre-district game.
Napoleon will move on to a rematch with Cascades Conference rival Manchester in the district semifinal next Tuesday at Lenawee Christian.
In its second season, the Pirates have gone 7-11-2. Napoleon’s first postseason game last year was a loss to Lumen Christi, who went on to win the Division 4 state title. This year the Pirates drew Stockwell Prep for the postseason opener, and now move on to the district semifinal.
“A lot of development, winning by this much is not something we expected, but a lot of hard work and good development‚” Napoleon’s Lily Eagen said.
Eagan, who had a pair of hat tricks in back-to-back wins over Jonesville and Hanover-Horton in April, picked up her first career four-goal game, and had several chances to add even more.
“Lily has been our leader all season long,” Napoleon coach Alan Berkeypile said. “She’s so explosive with the ball, and she’s really been a leader too in developing our youth.”
Despite Napoleon leading most of the way, and leading by multiple goals, the Sentinels kept things close, and managed to out-shoot the Pirates 18-15.
But many of the shots Stockwell Prep directed at goal, especially in the second half, were coming from 30 yards out or more, resulting in routine saves for Pirates goalkeeper Joy Flack.
“We talked about that, when we watched film on them we knew they had a couple good players in [Alexis Venderver] and [Lexi Menard] that could shoot from outside,” Berkeypile said. “We knew they had the wind in the second half, so it was telling them to stand firm, there was no need to dive, make them shoot those longer shots.”
Napoleon jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Eagen said the key offensively for Napoleon was “passing out to the wings and getting it back, and me dribbling and shooting and it went in.”
In the 12th minute Elle Van Poppel crossed a pass for Hallie Duval, who scored the game’s opening goal.
Moments later, after Meghan Smith was denied in her initial shot, Eagen stepped in and fired home the rebound. Eagen struck again in the 14th minute after a long run up the left side.
Then in the 31st minute Eagen sent a corner kick to Smith in front of the net for the fourth goal.
The Sentinels got on the board with 26 seconds left in the half as Clara McCauley scored from long range.
Stockwell Prep had earlier chances from Menard and Venderver, which did not find the back of the net.
Napoleon had chances to add onto its lead in the first half, with Eagen nearly finishing off a hat trick in the 26th minute, but getting denied. Stockwell Prep goal keeper Kylie Gaubatz also got to a long through ball intended for Smith before Smith could get to it in the 26th minute. The Sentinels defense also deflected a ball after Van Poppel had crossed a pass for Kelsey Chapman in the 27th minute.
Eagen eventually added another goal in the second half, firing a left-footed shot in from 30 yards out in the 54th minute to make it 5-1.
Stockwell Prep added another on a goal by Venderver winding her way through the Pirates defense in the 70th minute, but Eagen soon got that goal back scoring off a crossing pass in the 73rd.
McCauley capped off the scoring with a goal in the 73rd.
The win sets up a Pirates rematch with Manchester, who beat Napoleon 6-0 and 2-0 in conference games this spring, with the 2-0 game coming in early May during a stretch where the Pirates played a series of close games with some of the Cascades Conference heavyweights before a four-game unbeaten string late in the season.
That improvement in play led to Thursday, with Napoleon for the first time advancing in the postseason.
“It’s huge for our program,” Berkeypile said. “These girls have worked very hard. There’s lot of offseason work for some of these girls to develop and get ourselves in a position where we feel we can compete against some of these better teams.”
