Still has not sunk in yet. These were the words of 2025 USA Rugby Hall of Fame inductee Jone Naqica. Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Naqica can only described the feeling as unreal when he first received the news from his wife. “I’m still in disbelief,” Naqica said. “What an honour it is to be an inductee; when we received the call, I was speechless.” Naqica is currently in his village at Nawaisomo in Naitasiri. He has maternal links to the United States. Naqica started his rugby career in 1985 when he was five years old. He was born on January 26, 1980 and his career would span nearly three decades until 2014, when he retired at 34. This extraordinary longevity in such a physically demanding sport speaks to both his talent and dedication. “I want to thank everyone who believed in me; my family, friends and my former club. “It means a lot to be inducted knowing I am the first Fijian,” Naqica said. Described by his teammates and coaches as humble, intelligent and possess exceptional playmaking abilities, he was known for his ‘silky-smooth feet’ and natural passing skills. His vision on the field and understanding of the game made opportunities for teammates appear effortless. Proud wife, Lusiana highlighted that it was indeed a great moment for the family. “I know my husband is still in shock. “I am really proud of his achievements; he deserves it, every moment of it,” she said. The success of the USA team following Naqica’s retirement is considered a direct result of his contribution both on and off the field. Through the domestic competitions he helped in his club wins. This have evolved significantly since his playing days, his impact as an ambassador of the game, a brilliant tactician, and a record-breaking scorer remains an integral part of American rugby history. “I want to thank everyone who voted for me. “I did not expect this one bit but thank you very much,” Naqica added. Naqica’s international career with the USA Eagles began in 2001 when he made an immediate impact as a full-back in the 15s format, scoring two tries in his debut against South Africa. He went on to earn 8 Test caps in15s rugby, playing 12 games for the national team through 2010. His international tours included Canada (2002), Argentina (2003), and various USA-A games in 2009-2010. However, it was in the sevens game where Naqica truly established his legacy. From 2001-2010, he played as a fly-half for the USA Eagles 7s team, earning 23 caps and competing in 97 games across international competitions. He captained the 7s team from 2006- 2010 and represented his country in two Rugby World Cup Sevens tournaments (2005, 2009). His contribution to the American sevens rugby were historic—he retired as the all-time leading USA rugby scorer in 7s with an impressive 411 points. Feedback: josua.buredua@fijisun.com.fj
