National Bank Open: Four Huge Names Withdraw From Event–Including Djokovic and Alcaraz

The next 1000-level tournament on the ATP and WTA calendars is the National Bank Open, starting July 27th. It will be the first iteration of the event that runs for 12 days and has 96-player draws. French Open champion Coco Gauff and WTA world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka are among those set to feature. The men’s entry list in Toronto has been dealt a significant blow after four Top 10-ranked players, including three of the most significant names in the sport, withdrew.
Four Huge Names Withdraw From National Bank Open
Which Players Have Withdrawn?
ATP world No. 1 Jannik Sinner was the first player to withdraw from the National Bank Open. The Italian and his team have decided he needs more rest after Wimbledon, where he won the title. Sinner only returned from a three-month doping suspension in May and has played four tournaments since. The 23-year-old had some discomfort in his elbow at Wimbledon, which might have influenced the decision.
Carlos Alcaraz was the second player to withdraw from the National Bank Open. Alcaraz’s form has been sensational since April, winning the title or reaching the final at six consecutive tournaments. After losing to Sinner in the Wimbledon final, the five-time Grand Slam champion’s needing a break is understandable. He also missed last year’s iteration because he wanted to rest after competing at the Paris Olympics.
Novak Djokovic’s withdrawal was disappointing, but also unsurprising. The 24-time major winner has not competed at the tournament since 2018, and does not want to play in both Toronto and Cincinnati before the US Open at this stage of his career. Djokovic also struggled physically in his Wimbledon semifinal against Sinner and can use the additional time off to get fully fit.
Jack Draper was the final player to withdraw from the National Bank Open. The world No. 5 announced that he will not play in Toronto or Cincinnati because of a left arm injury. He does not think the problem is overly serious, and expects to be fit for the US Open.
Who Replaces Those Players on the Entry List?
Jannik Sinner was replaced at the National Bank Open by Roberto Carballes Baena. The Spaniard usually plays his best tennis on clay and struggles to consistently achieve good results on other surfaces. Although he is a fighter, the other players on the entry list might view him as a potentially good draw. Christopher O’Connell has been given an opportunity because Alcaraz elected not to play. He will try to raise his level after a challenging year so far, after performing solidly in 2023 and 2024.
Novak Djokovic’s spot on the National Bank Open entry list was taken by Roman Safiullin. The 2023 Wimbledon quarterfinalist is inconsistent, but his best tennis is capable of causing most players on the ATP Tour problems. Sebastian Ofner was the final player to move onto the entry list. After an impressive few seasons, which saw him reach a career-high ranking of No. 37 in January 2024, the Austrian sits outside the Top 100, although much of that is because of injuries. A good run at the Canadian Open would get him near the Top 100 again.
