A selfless neighbour entered a house as it went up in flames in a desperate bid to save a little girl who was trapped inside. Steven Common, 58, managed to enter the burning property on Kingsley Road in Lynemouth, Northumberland, after a fire erupted on Monday at around 9.30pm. He crawled on his knees to try and reach the four-year-old girl, who has since been named as Kiana-Lee Wallace . However, Steven had to stop "because the ceiling was falling down". Despite his best efforts, Kiana-Lee sadly passed away. It has been reported that a woman, aged in her 20s and a two-year-old girl, who were also in the house, was raced to hospital. They are in stable condition. Steven's partner Karen Coulson, 68, has recalled the petrifying moment he ran over to the building. She told Mail Online : "He went in with a wet tea towel and was crawling on his hands and knees. The mother was really distressed and I asked her where her child was - she told me she was in the kitchen. I told Steven and we got the house pipe and tried to put it out. It was horrible because we knew she was inside but we couldn't do anything - he did try his best but he couldn't go any further." Karen explained that another entrance was blocked because the "flames were so high". The pair alerted their other neighbours by "banging on the doors" . Karen explained that her partner is feeling "battered" following the tragedy. She added: "God knows what the young family are going through. The mam is still in hospital." On Friday, a police cordon was still seen in place outside of the scene. Det Chief Insp Louise Jenkins, the senior investigating officer on the case for Northumbrian Police, commented on the tragedy. She said: "This is an absolutely devastating incident in which a young girl has tragically lost her life. "All of our thoughts and condolences are with her family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Inquiries remain at a very early stage, and with the support of our partners from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service we are determined to establish exactly what happened. We are asking anyone with information - no matter how small or insignificant it may seem - to come forward and share what they know."
