KPop Demon Hunters just made history. The Sony Pictures/Netflix film about about a world-renowned K-Pop girl group that are secretly battling supernatural threats is now the most-watched Netflix animated movie ever. The film, which debuted June 20 on Netflix, has since earned 26.3 million views during the week of July 21-27, per the platform. KPop Demon Hunters' soundtrack is also making waves, debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Soundtracks chart and No. 8 on the all-genre Billboard 200. The album, which has nine original songs, nailed its K-pop essence thanks to producers like Teddy Park, co-founder of The Black Label, along with Grammy-nominated and winning producers Lindgren, Stephen Kirk, Jenna Andrews, all who have worked with K-pop legends such as BTS, Twice and Blackpink. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and co-written with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, the film stars Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun. "When K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey aren't selling out stadiums, they're using their secret powers to protect their fans from supernatural threats," a plot for the film reads. KPop Demon Hunters' success comes amid the same week of another hit project for Netflix. Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to the writer-star’s 1996 golf comedy, debuted at number one among distributor Netflix’s English films, becoming the biggest U.S. opening weekend of all time for a film on the platform, per the company. Happy Gilmore 2 amassed 46.7 million views in the three days since its July 25 release, the biggest opening for any Netflix film featuring Adam Sandler, Netflix said in a press release. (His past work there includes Hustle, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and the Murder Mystery movies.)
