New Cardiff play area plans unveiled after noise complaint sparked move

New plans have been developed for a sport and games facility to replace the current MUGA site in Hailey Park in Cardiff after one resident made noise complaints. The new facility will be built between the children’s play area and the tennis courts, approximately 50 metres from residential homes. As part of a wider £2 million programme being delivered in communities across the city this financial year, Hailey Park will have a new place to play multiple different sports as well as a "catch-up" area, with seating and table-tennis. Over 180 local school children helped design the sport and games area in the park, which is designed to be inclusive. The new facility features a practice area for football, hockey, calisthenics, rugby, netball and cricket. Whilst the new facility is being developed, the current MUGA will still be in use. Residents were outraged when plans were announced in January for the removal of the MUGA due to a resident making complaints about the noise to Public Services Ombudsman for Wales. The complainant received a pay out from Cardiff Council of over £1,000 . Once development of the new sport and games facility is complete the MUGA will be removed and the area returned to grass, ensuring no loss of green space. Cabinet member Cllr Jennifer Burke said: "I’m really excited to see these plans for Hailey Park become reality. "After some well-documented issues, being able to ensure opportunities for play in the park are maintained and deliver a new facility that offers so much more than is currently available for local children to enjoy, is a really positive outcome. "Traditional games areas tend to primarily appeal to boys, so it’s fantastic that so many girls, as well as boys, shared their views with us, so that we could design a facility that will meet their needs as well, and is as safe and inclusive as possible."
