New Hillcrest happenings beckon and enthrall: Sun Messages
@Source: cleveland.com
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Tired of the “same old, same old?” Or “Not again!” Or “I am bored.” These are the expressions others say -- and that we may feel, too. And, if so, it’s past time to shake things up. Replace the blahs with “Something new!” “I can do it!” and “This is engaging!” Pursue a new interest. Make a new friend. Get involved. Launch a spring of your own (in your step, in your heart) to enliven our region. Hillcrest’s seven cities are blooming with opportunity. Read on, then step up and step out! Applause! A new opportunity for theatrical youth beckons. Registration is open now as Gilmour Academy teams up with The One Of A KIND Theater Company this summer to offer a premier six-week Youth Theater Camp for third- through eighth-graders at the Lorraine and Bill Dodero Center for Performing Arts. Camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily June 23 through Aug. 1. Before- and after-care also will be offered. Students will explore acting, improvisation, vocal performance, dance and crafts. Field trips, swimming, guest artists, special activities and daily lunch will also be included. All campers will receive a speaking role in an original musical version of “Hansel and Gretel, The Musical!” Weekly showcases also will be offered to family and friends, who can enjoy the fruits of creative labor. Jill Koslen-Freireich is director and founder of the One Of A KIND theater company, as well as the Beachwood Community Theater. Lucus Clark, Gilmour’s theater director, will be working with the master program for students in ninth through eleventh grade. Master students will be trained to assist instructors, work as junior counselors and perform in “Hansel and Gretel, The Musical!” along with a final showcase of their own. Master students will receive community service hours for participation (an interview is required). For pricing and more information, go to www.gilmour.org/summercamp On a roll? And what a roll. A recent-to-me email read, “The Rocket Arena erupted when a Cavs fan nailed an incredible 50-foot putt, winning himself a 2025 membership to StoneWater Golf in Highland Heights.” The performance also earned every fan in the arena a free round of golf at the award-winning course. Was it luck? Skill? Timing? Regardless, it was fabulous. “This is more incredible than I could have ever imagined,” said Lindsey Neidus, chief marketing officer of StoneWater Golf. “We’re thrilled to welcome a course full of Cavs fans this summer.” StoneWater is at One Club Drive in Highland Heights. Israel Independence Day: Temple Israel Ner Tamid of Mayfield Heights will celebrate Israel’s Independence Day, Yom Ha’Atzmaut, with two events. At 6:15 p.m. May 2, the temple will hold a congregational Shabbat dinner featuring Mediterranean food, followed by worship at 7:30 p.m. RSVPs for dinner are required by April 30 by calling 440-473-5120. Though there is no cost for dinner, donations are always appreciated. A parade through the city is also planned at 9 a.m. May 4, with Mayfield Heights police supporting. Temple President Mark Friedman explained that Israel Independence Day is a joyous end to a week of memorials. In fact, Jews around the world observe two Israeli memorial days in the spring. Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, is held this year from sundown April 23 to sundown April 24. Yom HaZikaron, Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terror, this year is from sundown April 29 to sundown April 30. Weekly Shabbat (sabbath) services are streamed on the temple’s YouTube channel (@templeisraelnertamid3013) for those unable to attend in person. With summer around the corner, high school graduates 18 and older can gain valuable experience while positively impacting the lives of children across the region. Rate of pay is $14 an hour. Both of the in-person information and hiring sessions will be held at the Lakewood Family YMCA branch, 16915 Detroit Road in Lakewood. The Y offers training and support staff members, building leadership and talent. “Our counselors consistently tell us this job is rewarding, fun and fulfilling,” the press release said. Responsibilities include overseeing daily camp activities, using management and communication skills, providing clear instructions, offering encouragement, mediating conflicts and fostering teamwork among campers. Earth month: From the Friends of Euclid Creek newsletter: “The rebirth we experience in April makes it the perfect month to include Earth Day (April 22). If you missed the day, don’t stop there! April also marks the acceleration of the Friends of Euclid Creek’s stewardship. Learn more what you can do by checking foec.com." Lend me your words!
