New Scarlets investors not interested in Ospreys merger as they make 'reluctant hero' claim

New Scarlets investors House of Luxury (HOL) insist a merger with the Ospreys is not being considered. HOL hope to acquire a 55% shareholding in the Scarlets over time and have taken charge of off-field operations at the club. They arrive in Welsh rugby at its most turbulent point since the inception of the regions in 2003, with the Welsh Rugby Union likely to reduce the number of professional clubs from four to three or even two. If the WRU decide to go with two professional sides it is highly likely there will only be room for one side in west Wales, making an Ospreys and Scarlets merger a potential option. But HOL's chief experience officer Simon Kozlowski is adamant a merger with their arch rivals is not being considered. "Honestly, no," he told BBC Radio Wales when asked whether they are considering a merger. "We just really haven't given much thought and energy to a merger situation because in terms of plan A, B, C and D it is probably at the lower end of the alphabet for us. "Yesterday (Friday) was day one for us in all reality. There'll be other conversations to be had here. "We are the new meat on the chopping board here so we are going to have to have some conversations with the various stakeholders. "But for now we haven't even gotten to thinking about mergers. "You are going to need some very persuasive people with some very elegant words to bring us onside with that one." Despite the deep-rooted problems in Welsh rugby Kozlowski sees an opportunity to turn the Scarlets around. "We tend to go where there's blood on the streets because we think that's an opportunity for the most positive social change," he told BBC Radio Wales. "We think there's massive value in Welsh rugby to be preserved, to be sustained, to be increased and shared with the surrounding communities. "We were waiting for a long time for someone to do that. "We come to the forefront here as something of a reluctant hero because we were waiting for somebody else to wear the cape and they wouldn't. "We are stepping in based on what we believe in."
