SEOUL, June 6. /TASS/. New South Korean president Lee Jae-myung and his US counterpart Donald Trump agreed to play a round of golf and discussed politically motivated assassination attempts faced by both politicians over the phone, the office of the South Korean leader said.
"President Donald Trump invited President Lee Jae-myung to the United States, and President Lee Jae-myung replied that they should meet and consult frequently, since the Republic of Korea and the United States have special allied relations," the office of Lee, who was elected president on June 4, said of his first telephone conversation with Trump.
It said the conversation was friendly and open.
"The leaders talked about their golf game and agreed to play a round when time allowed to strengthen the alliance," Lee's office said.
"They discussed the political problems and assassination threats they have both faced, and agreed that firm leadership is born through overcoming difficulties," an official representative of the administration said.
An attempt was made on Lee Jae-myung’s life in January 2024, when a perpetrator stabbed him in the neck. The attack was politically motivated.
Trump has survived two assassination attempts over the past year. The first occurred at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania last July, when a bullet fired by the shooter grazed the politician's ear.
The second time, a radical and supporter of aid to Ukraine opened fire near the Mar-a-Lago residence last September.
