@Source: news18.com
New Zealand all-rounder Thamsyn Newton has announced her retirement from all forms of cricket after a 14-year career, which included 10 ODIs and 15 T20Is.
Newton was part of the squad in the 2016 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, where New Zealand narrowly missed out on a final spot, losing to the eventual champions, West Indies, by six runs in the semi-final.
As a medium pacer all-rounder, she took 11 wickets in 10 ODIs, including a five-wicket haul against Pakistan in 2016. In T20Is, she claimed nine wickets in 15 matches, with her best figures being three wickets for nine runs in her third T20I.
In New Zealand’s domestic circuit, Newton won multiple tournaments, including the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, the 50-over contest, securing it once each for Canterbury and Wellington.
She also triumphed in the Super Smash for Wellington four times.
Who Is Thamsyn Newton?
Thamsyn Newton began her domestic career with Wellington in the 2011-12 season before moving to Canterbury, where she played from 2014 to 2018. She then returned to Wellington for another five seasons before joining Central Districts ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. Throughout her career, she featured in four Hallyburton Johnstone Shield finals—the premier domestic 50-over tournament—winning the title with Canterbury in 2015 and with Wellington in 2022, and finishing as runner-up in 2017 and 2023. Her success also extended to the Super Smash, where she lifted the trophy four times with Wellington. In her debut season with Central Districts, she reached another final, narrowly losing in a thrilling decider to her former side.
Internationally, Newton’s last ODI appearance was in 2017. After a three-year absence from the national setup, she regained her New Zealand central contract in 2021, although she played in just three additional T20Is thereafter. Her career also included a stint in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League, representing the Perth Scorchers in the 2017-18 season.
