Newcastle decision on £50m Marc Guehi transfer amid Liverpool and Chelsea complications
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Newcastle are yet to make a fresh approach for Liverpool target Marc Guehi, who Crystal Palace value at £50million. Guehi, 24, has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, who Mirror Football recently reported were in pole position . But this time last year, Newcastle were pushing to sign him. The England international was fresh off an impressive campaign at Euro 2024 and St James' Park chiefs lodged four bids rising to £65m . None of them met Palace's £70m valuation, though, and Newcastle ultimately abandoned their pursuit. The Eagles have been forced to lower their asking price this summer, with Guehi having entered the final year of his contract. But as things stand, Newcastle haven't gone back in for the FA Cup-winning captain. The Chronicle report that Eddie Howe and Co. are monitoring Guehi's situation from afar, although they don't rule out revisiting the negotiating table. Liverpool therefore remain the clear favourites, looking to build on their £200m-plus spending spree this summer. The Reds are keen to bring in a centre-back who's younger than Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate , the latter of whom has also entered the last 12 months of his deal amid rumoured interest from Real Madrid . It's added that Guehi would be willing to run down his contract if Palace can't facilitate his sale before the summer transfer window closes on Monday, September 1. There's also the issue of Chelsea , who are due 15 per cent of any profit over the £18m they sold the 24-year-old for in 2021. The Blues themselves have been tentatively linked but it's Liverpool who appear to be Newcastle's fiercest competitors. The Magpies were desperate to sign Guehi a year ago but Palace chairman Steve Parish made it clear that they'd demand 'superstar money'. Parish told BBC Sport : "We'd like to keep hold of him. There's a price and a situation where we might consider it. Somebody [in another interview] said he's a superstar, so somebody has got to pay superstar money. Should Liverpool or Newcastle pay £50m for Marc Guehi? Have your say in the comments section . "Realistically, homegrown, 24 years old, sensational talent, somebody has to make it difficult for us. At the moment it isn't. He'll still be at Crystal Palace at the moment, but it's not impossible. "He is certainly not making anybody's life difficult, his agents are decent people. It's a very good situation. Whether he is here or not will make no difference to how he performs." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
