Newry GAA club hosting country music festival to raise funds for new pitch
@Source: belfastlive.co.uk
The oldest GAA club in Newry has organised a three-day country music festival to help raise funds for a new pitch and keep the club growing. There are currently 360 members across all ages at Thomas Davis Gaelic Football Club playing on the one pitch. The club commitee had a funding plan in place, but said it could take almost a decade to raise the money needed for an extra GAA pitch on their grounds just off the A1 at Doran's Hill. Later this month, they will be the first GAA club in Co Armagh to host a volunteer-led music festival featuring some of the biggest names in local country music to raise funds for new facilities. Along the way, the club said they've had huge support from local businesses, and hope the influx of festival-goers will give the local economy a boost. On how the idea came around, he said inspiration came from some other clubs who gave them guidance. He explained: "We saw Leitrim and Inniskeen GAA in Monaghan were doing it. It was brilliant, and they're making a hell of a lot of money for the club down there and their facilities are amazing. "We were talking to those guys and they said about what they do, I went back to our committee and presented it to them, showed them it was financially viable, how it would work with the council, and from there got a unanimous yes to go ahead. "It's now two weeks away, we've got some of the best bands in the country playing and it's going to be an amazing weekend. I'm excited for it now." The committee are expecting around 6,000 people will attend the festival throughout the weekend from Friday, May 23, to Sunday, May 25. Iúr Music Festival will take place in a large marquee being organised by the club at their Doran's Hill site. Headliners at the event will include The Tumbling Paddies, The Highstool Prophets and Ruaile Buaile, with a DJ playing each night until close at 1.30am. The club have organised shuttle buses from Newry city centre and the Carrickdale Hotel, with the event suitable for over 18s. Tiarnan said they have had great support from local businesses, and hope the festival will give the area a boost. He said: "We've had a lot of local businesses getting onboard with sponsorships, and local hotels like the Carrickdale, Canal Court and Flagstaff Lodge are giving discounts to anyone who buys a ticket. In return, we're giving people a ticket for £10 if they stay local rather than paying the usual £25 rate. "We're puting on a shuttle bus too that will go from Newry, it'll start at the Stonebridge and we'll have another stop at The Railway Bar, they have supported us massively. "We're wanting to support local with this event as well as raising money for the new pitch. We're trying to keep everything as local as we can with it, a local whiskey distillery is our exclusive whiskey partner for the event, and a local wholesaler is supplying the alcohol." As for why the fundraising event is needed, and how it will support the club, the 24-year-old added: "I'm a coach for the ladies team too and was at the club on Tuesday night, and our ladies had to train on the soccer pitch because all our underage teams were in. There were three groups on there then there was an under-14s match on that pitch as well. "We've only got the one pitch for so many different groups and 360 members, and the ladies had to train on a soccer pitch - it's just not good enough. Sometimes the ladies aren't able to train until around 8pm, then they're not home until 9pm or 9.30pm. "There are also talks taking place on an Irish language nursery and primary school on around three acres of our site too. We had a meeting this week and it's at a better stage now than it ever was before. "There are also 200 homes being built across the road from us, so our club numbers are only going to grow from here. It's an exciting time for the club." You can find out more and get tickets for the Iúr Music Festival by clicking here.
