Replacing boiler fan to cost $1m

Replacing a damaged boiler fan at the Lautoka sugar mill will cost $1 million, says Sugar Ministry permanent secretary Yogesh Karan.

Mr Karan said he had been receiving updates from Fiji Sugar Corporation on the repair works since the Lautoka mill aborted its scheduled 2020 season opening last Friday because of damage to the fan.

“To get the parts from overseas, it would cost $1 million so they are getting the repairs done locally,” he said.

Mr Karan said a blade in the boiler fan system had been damaged and needed to be repaired.

“We must also understand that we are dealing with very old machines.”

He said the postponement of crushing at the Lautoka mill was unfortunate.

“I have told them to put all efforts in the repair works and have the Lautoka mill started.

“I can understand the farmers frustration and it definitely isn’t a good start to the season.”

Mr Karan said FSC had been told to work towards opening the Lautoka mill crushing this week.

Farmers from Lautoka, Nadi and Sigatoka have been sending cane to the Ba mill after FSC issued cutting quotas in these areas.
