Tourists to undergo COVID test – Dr Fong

Fully-vaccinated tourists and visitors will only need to undergo a COVID-19 test and this is the only restriction in place.

This, according to Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong.

He was responding to a question on whether fully vaccinated individuals from Australia will need to be in quarantine before they visit their holiday destinations in Fiji.

“We are just looking at a protocol where it allows us to test them,” he said.

“That is the only restriction that they will have. Whatever we do, it will be for the purpose of testing.

“They’ll stay within a safe travel area at least for the first two to three days while we try and sort out the test negative that they’ll need to have.

“So it is much the same as we have discussed previously.

“We are reducing the more stringent part of quarantine program because that protection has been overtaken by the vaccination and the COVID-safe measures that we have around.”

Dr Fong said members of the public should also consider that while the ministry had introduced several mandatory and punitive measures to promote adherence to COVID-safe measures, public engagement and compliance remained the main determining factor to preventing further transmission.
