Newtownards child helping others after suffering brain haemorrhage aged 1

A child from Northern Ireland is helping others after she suffered a brain haemorrhage when she was 18-months-old. Alex Chambers spent one week in ICU in December 2023 and was in a coma. She then spent three months in hospital re-learning how to smile, sit, and eat. Now, the Newtownards three-year-old is undertaking a golf challenge to raise money for Little Heroes. The charity for the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children aims to raise funds for the hospital’s paediatric services, fund treatments and equipment, provide support for families, and more. Alex's mum Nadine told Be : "Alex was a healthy 18 month old when we found her on the morning of the 8th December in her cot extremely unwell. We rang an ambulance and performed CPR. She was rushed to the Ulster Hospital where the told me that she might not make it the 45 minutes it would take for the NI Star team from the Royal to come and transfer her to the RVH for Sick Children. "Alex fought and fought and made it to the Royal where she was given a CT scan. It showed a huge brain bleed but there was no indication of why it happened. Almost a year later and after repeated scans, we found out this was an AVM - essentially a malformation of vessels in her brain which burst. "Alex spent one week in ICU and was in a coma. She was then moved to Paul Ward where she spent three months relearning how to smile, cry, speak, sit, eat etc. Alex had to relearn absolutely everything. "We got Alex home in March 2024 and her recovery continues. Alex was given a Kaye Walker in May of 2024. The part of her brain that remains damaged is her cerebellum, this controls her mobility and coordination." Alex is still relearning how to walk, and last year with the help of her Kaye Walker she completed a sponsored walk raising over £16,000. The Co Down mum added: "Alex’s mobility is improving so we thought we would again create a fundraiser that supported her recovery. Alex is walking a few steps independently and a lot more holding our hands. So to improve her balance, walking on different terrain like grass, up hills, down hills etc will all contribute. Golf challenges and improves balance and coordination and that’s exactly what Alex needs to help her recovery. "Our local golf club, with the support of their new appointment captains Ross Moore and Claire Johnson, choose Little Heroes as their charity of the year (after learning of Alex’s story). So we thought, what better way to raise money than to team up with Scrabo Golf Club? "Alex has been made an honorary member and will be teeing off from the 1st nine holes and walking this distance. She teed off on June 9 [during] Ladies Day (which helped raise over £1,500 for the fundraiser), and she will have completed this challenge by the 24th August, where she will tee off from the 9th hole on Scrabo Golf Club's charity day." Nadine also explained the difference Little Heroes made during the time Alex was in hospital. She said: "Without the charity, we would have had no bed to sleep in meaning we wouldn’t have been able to stay with Alex every single day and night in hospital. "They provided showering and cooking facilities so we never needed to leave her side. The charity provide medical equipment, sensory equipment, Play Department team resources and so, so much more. "What they do in the hospital makes such a difference and we are dedicated to supporting Little Heroes for as long as we can. We owe everything to the team at the RVH who helped saved our little girl's life. "We will always teach Alex just how incredible they are and how her resilience and determination, combined with the kindness and generosity of so many, have helped support the hospital and make sure that other children can continue to receive this essential care."
