Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage in "Longlegs."
Longlegs—the horror hit starring Nicolas Cage as a demented serial killer—debuts on streaming on Hulu this week.
Written and directed by Osgood Perkins—the filmmaker behind the upcoming horror thriller The Monkey—Longlegs opened in theaters on July 12, 2024, and shifted to digital streaming for purchase and rental on Aug. 23.
Maika Monroe (It Follows) stars in Longlegs as FBI Agent Lee Harker, who is brought aboard a case where a devil-worshipping serial killer who only goes by Longlegs (Cage) has been eluding law enforcement officials for more than 30 years. As an expert in symbology, Lee interprets clues from the crime scenes of the murders involving Longlegs, only to discover that she is much closer to the case than she originally thought.

In a red carpet interview prior to the release of the film, Nicolas Cage told Extra found an unusual inspiration—his late mother—for his creepy character in Longlegs.
“It was interesting because when Oz Perkins, the director, sent me the script [and] said, ‘This is a movie about my mom,’ which isn’t what you would expect from a director of a horror film,” Cage explained to Extra. “I said, ‘That is interesting, Oz, because when I was reading this character, it became about my mom.’ I heard her voice—she wasn’t Satanic—but she went through a lot.”

As such, Cage began to incorporate some characteristics of his mother into a frightening character.
“I heard her voice and the way she would move and suddenly I thought, ‘You know, I could that put into this character. That was an inspiration I owe [to her],” Cage told Extra. “If I’m any good in the movie, I owe it to my mom.”
Longlegs begins streaming on Hulu on Friday.
