By Adebowale Johnson In a groundbreaking event that captured the imagination of leaders, farmers and entrepreneurs, Nigeria recently hosted the World Agritourism Festival, spotlighting agritourism as a powerful engine for economic growth and sustainable development. At the heart of this movement is Xtralarge Farms, a visionary enterprise that has redefined agriculture by blending innovation, culture and tourism into a vibrant tapestry of opportunity. Founded over a decade ago by Dr. Seyi Davis and Dr. Moji Davis, Xtralarge Farms has grown from humble beginnings to a global model of organic farming and agritourism. Their commitment to producing natural, GMO-free food has earned international acclaim, with exports spanning three continents and a network of over 200,000 direct affiliates worldwide. The farm’s innovative AgriTech City—a luxurious experimental farm—is a testament to their mission to simplify farming, promote healthy living, and create economic opportunities. At the festival, Dr. Moji Davis, executive director of Xtralarge Farms, passionately articulated the vision behind this fusion of agriculture and tourism. “Tourism epitomizes culture and entertainment, and we can borrow from that to make agriculture more profitable and sustainable,” she said. “We are inviting everyone into farming through the power of tourism, creating opportunities and inspiring future entrepreneurs.” The event attracted influential voices such as Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, CEO of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, who called on Nigerians abroad to invest in agritourism and agro-processing. She emphasized the sector’s potential to diversify Nigeria’s economy beyond oil, engage youth, and celebrate cultural heritage. Lagos Special Advisor, Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola, highlighted the city’s emerging role as an agritourism hub, praising local initiatives that integrate food production with tourism to foster food security and cultural pride. Chairman of the planning committee, Mr. Sola Ajayi, expressed pride in Nigeria’s leadership in this innovative sector. “This festival is a testament to our commitment to shaping the future of agriculture and tourism,” he said. “Our approach will resonate globally, transforming rural landscapes and empowering local economies.” The World Agritourism Festival not only showcased Nigeria’s untapped agricultural potential but also set a new standard for how agritourism can drive sustainable development, health, and economic prosperity worldwide. As Nigeria pioneers this transformative journey, the fusion of farming and tourism promises to cultivate a brighter, more inclusive future.
