Today’s newly-appointed sports presenter cancelled her wedding to former fiance Todd Liubinskas in September 2023, just weeks before they were set to walk down the aisle – and looking back 18 months later, she says she has no regrets about the dramatic decision.
“To be honest, it feels like a lot of time ago now. So much has happened since, and I haven’t actually spoken about it,” she tells Stellar.
“It certainly was an emotional rollercoaster. When someone hurts you like that, you experience all the emotions from sadness to shock to anger. But sometimes you just have to get through it. You’ve got no option, really … People would ask me, ‘Are you OK?’ And I’d say, ‘Not right now, but I will be’.”
Speaking publicly for the first time about the sudden break-up, Mason cites a breakdown in trust as the reason for her decision to end things. It was such a turbulent time, she ultimately sought professional help to get through it.
“I was a bit apprehensive, but it definitely did help. I’m a big believer everything happens for a reason, as well,” she says.
“I look back at that time and I applaud myself, like, ‘Good on you for getting through it.’ Because you also don’t want to be cynical. It’s really helpful to be able to move on and leave it in the past.”
Mason, who was named as the Today show’s new sports presenter earlier this month (replacing Alex Cullen, who was stood down in January), has since moved on with a new love: boyfriend Liam Knight, a former forward for the Canterbury Bulldogs who announced he had signed on to play for Hull in the UK’s Super League on the same day her new gig on Today was revealed. She says that during their seven months apart, they will rely on FaceTime and texts to stay in touch, and admits that moving to the other side of the world to be with him was never really an option.
“I don’t think so. My career is definitely in rugby league here. I don’t think he would ever consider that something he would ask of me. He knows I love my job back here … I pinch myself at the moment, to be looking at where I am and thinking this is what I’m doing. It’s such a nice and happy spot to be in,” she says.
