Nintendo Switch 2 AI boost 'confirmed' after surprise patent update
@Source: dailystar.co.uk
Nintendo has arguably never placed as much of a premium on impressive visuals as its rivals, but with the Switch 2 getting a full reveal on April 2, it appears the company is about to make waves. We're waiting to find out the system's release date and pricing , but we may now have another glimpse at how Nintendo will maximise its hardware using AI. Rumours had suggested the Switch 2 would leverage AI upscaling to hit higher resolutions , but a fresh patent update seemingly confirms it — meaning we could be in for 4K versions of Mario and Zelda adventures at long last. Here's all we've learned. A patent, which was updated and published last week on March 13, has seemingly confirmed Nintendo is looking to upscale its games to 4K (thanks, Game Rant ). "Image up-conversion is a technique that allows for conversion of images produced in a first resolution (e.g., 540p resolution or 960×540 with 0.5 megapixels) to a higher resolution (e.g., 1080p resolution, 1920×1080, with 2.1 megapixels). This process can be used to show images of the first resolution on a higher resolution display," the patent explains. "Thus, for example, a 540p image can be displayed on a 1080p television and (depending on the nature of the up-conversion process) may be shown with increased graphical fidelity as compared to if the 540p image were displayed directly with traditional (e.g., linear) upscaling on a 540 television." It certainly sounds a lot like DLSS, which is NVIDIA's version of the tech. We've got a full explainer of the tech , but the short version is that it fills in pixels moment-to-moment with information so the device itself doesn't have to render it natively. As I mentioned in my piece about my move to PC gaming , it's not a 'silver bullet' solution — things can flicker, or textures can look a little too shiny, but for the most part it's an impressive way to leverage AI. It means a less powerful machine can still offer plenty of detail because the hardware itself isn't doing as much of the heavy lifting. We're expecting the dock to play a part in helping provide the power for AI upscaling, but we'll find out more in a couple of weeks.
