A New Jersey city in the southern half of the state was ranked in the top 10 in a national listing of “best places to retire” in the northeastern U.S. According to Travel + Leisure, Vineland ranked as No. 8 on the list for its lower taxes and affordable housing. Within the list are three Pennsylvania towns, two from New York, two from Massachusetts and one from New Hampshire. Here’s how it made it to this national ranking. Why was Vineland, N.J., ranked the eighth best place to retire in the Northeast? The South Jersey city of Vineland, located in Cumberland County, is about 40 miles from Philadelphia. “The county’s median home value is $205,600,” according to Travel + Leisure. In terms of taxes, Social Security income is not taxable in New Jersey. Vineland is one of the most affordable cities in the U.S. It was ranked in the top 10 most affordable small cities in the country by the National Association of Home Builders with many housing styles available. With a population of 61,126, the city’s website describes Vineland as a “culturally diverse community filled with wonderful, giving people, a friendly business environment, and a cost of living well below the state average.” For recreation, Parvin State Park has lakes for boating and fishing. There are also places for hiking, camping, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Vineland is also home to two public golf courses, Eastlyn Golf Course and Latona Country Club. There are also an additional 14 golf courses within 20 miles of Vineland. For those retirees looking for more laid-back fun, Vineland is home to the only drive-in movie theater in the state of New Jersey and has a flea market that has served the city and greater Cumberland County for over 30 years. Rowan College of South Jersey has a campus in Cumberland County that provides educational enrichment and a performing-arts center.
