N.J. sprinting star details injury that derailed his final HS season
@Source: nj.com
A hamstring pull is a sprinter’s worst nightmare. It’s a nightmare Southern star senior Cole Cramer has unfortunately become far too familiar with. It’s an injury the Tennessee commit has dealt with on three previous occasions, and at last week’s the Ocean County Championships at Jackson Liberty, he hurt his hamstring for a fourth time. Friday’s scratch from Day 1 of the NJSIAA South, Groups 1 & 4 meet in Pennsauken confirmed that Cramer’s in-state season and high school career has officially come to an end. “[The injury] happened in the [100 dash] finals,” Cramer said. “I had a good run in prelims and felt good, but I felt like I didn’t reach full speed. I just had enough momentum to carry me through but I didn’t really get to accelerate at all. [My hamstring] just locked up. That’s the third time I‘ve gotten hurt on that track.” Southern head coach Scott Baker confirmed with NJ Advance Media last week that the injury Cramer suffered was significant enough to put his season in jeopardy. Cramer is hopeful he can return for New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia. The national meet runs June 19-22 at historic Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania. “I’m going to an orthopedic [soon] and recovery will start from there,” Cramer said. “Getting in the right mental space will be harder than the physical recovery because I‘ve been through this so much. [I could] maybe [be back] for nationals. It depends on how the rehab process goes.” Cramer won this past indoor season’s NJSIAA Meet of Champions gold in the 55-meter dash. His PR 6.24 that won him the race ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 4 in the country. His PR 6.62 in the 60-meter dash was No. 1 in the state and No. 2 in the U.S. Earlier this spring, Cramer clocked a season-best 10.3 in the 100 dash that ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 49 in the U.S. His PR 10.22 from last spring was No. 3 in N.J. and No. 15 in the nation and it came before a first-place 10.35 at the Brooks Invitational in Seattle, Wash. He also held the state’s fastest 200 dash time this season (21.11) and had a PR 21.01 in the event from last spring that was No. 2 in N.J. Cramer ends his Southern career with six M of Cs silver medals on top of his gold from this past winter, along with Shore Conference records both wind-legal and wind-aided in the 100 and 200.
