No. 4 Ridgewood boys tennis claims Bergen County Tournament title, wins 3 flights

Earlier this season, Ridgewood head coach Deirdre Tobin said she had a check list for her team with goals for the year.
Ridgewood, No. 4 in the NJ.com Top 20, checked off one goal, claiming the Bergen County Tournament title on Sunday in Old Tappan.
“This was definitely one of our top goals because of tying last year for second,” Tobin said, referring to finishing in second at last year’s Bergen County Tournament.
“Knowing what we had as a team this year, we set this as one of our top goals going into state’s next week.”
For the Maroons, the program took the wins at first-singles over No. 20 Dwight-Englewood, along with both doubles flights, winning first-double over No. 17 Bergen Catholic and second-doubles against Dwight-Englewood.
Dwight-Englewood took second place at the Bergen County Tournament, followed by Bergen Catholic in third place.
At first-singles, Niko Martirossian took down Dylan Dennis of Dwight-Englewood 6-0, 6-4. Martirossian missed Ridgewood’s matchup with Dwight-Englewood earlier this season due to an ankle injury, but has worked his way back into the form and played well throughout the tournament.
“I was confident coming into this,” he said. “The first round is usually easier for me so I try to work on my strokes and stuff like that. As the next rounds go on, I really focus on strategy more and how to win.”
Martirossian watched on as teammate Nolan Sharma faced off against Dennis when Dwight-Englewood traveled to Ridgewood earlier this season, which he said helped when coming into their matchup today.
“My ankle is better now so I wasn’t too worried about [the match],” Martirossian said. “It just felt great to win. I train with Dylan [Dennis] so I know how he plays. We both know each other, but Nolan [Sharma] did give me some helpful tips on how to win.”
Ridgewood then won its second-doubles matchup against Dwight-Englewood. Juri Jong and Ethan Hong took the victory against Tyler Yecies and Hal Azaria 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Hong played in the doubles match against Yecies and Azaria, but with the roster changes with Martirossian back, Jong took over for Cameron Linnington.
“From the start of the season, this is what our lineup looked like with our doubles and going into the states,” Tobin said. “I wanted to make sure that they had a high level of competition going into that.”
Jong and Hong each played in last year’s Bergen County Tournament, but fell in the semifinal round. Tobin was proud of their bounce-back performance in this year’s competition.
“My second-doubles were in this situation last year. They have played together for two years, know each other well, compliment each other very well, their style, their personalities,” she said. “They knew what they had to do. After winning the tie-break in the first set, those two just had to stay focused and really just the pressure was on Dwight-Englewood to have to win that second set.”
Ridgewood claimed the tournament title with a first-doubles win against Bergen Catholic. Ethan Rosenberg and Ben Caradonna took the win over Brian Song and Daniel Song 5-7, 6-4, 10-7.
After dropping the first set, Tobin talked with Rosenberg and Caradonna, telling them to “play their game.”
“I think that they knew what they had to do, as well, and just getting to that second set and then having the momentum going into the tie-break really, I think, they had the advantage again,” Tobin said. “Since we had Nico win and we had our second-doubles win, it was a little bit of less pressure in a way, in a way.”
Bergen Catholic and Leonardo Park took the win at third-singles against Zach Chizzik of No. 18 Tenafly, 0-6, 6-2, 10-1. Surrounded by seniors, the freshman-sophomore matchup drew a crowd with every grunts, cheer and reaction coming from the court after every point.
“Today was a really nice experience playing in my first county tournament and winning it,” Park said. “I want to thank my teammates for supporting me this season and I look forward to working with them through the next seasons.”
Chizzik played aggressively in his first set win over Park. Park turned the tables by matching the intensity and had the help of his Bergen Catholic teammates on the other side of the fence cheering him on.
“In the beginning, I didn’t really play well,” Park said. “As time went on, I was trying to be more consistent and adapt to how [Chizzik] plays. I liked it when they were cheering me on. It gives me more positive energy.”
Dwight-Englewood took the second-singles match when Kyle Lee took the win against Ishwar Idnani of Park Ridge 6-1, 7-6 (7-1). The win there helped secure the second place finish at the tournament.
As the Bergen County Tournament came to a close and as the players received their trophies, Tobin focused on the next goal for her team: the state sectional tournament.
“We met our goal and we’re looking forward to starting the state stuff next week,” Tobin said. “This is just kind of a check on our list. I’m really proud of the boys. Everybody played great tennis today and really kind of stepped it up to another level.”
