No link between COVID vaccines and sudden deaths, confirms ICMR-AIIMS study

After comprehensive investigations the Indian Council of Medical Research ICMR and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences AIIMS New Delhi have firmly concluded that COVID-19 vaccines are not linked to sudden unexplained deaths among adults in India.
Responding to growing concerns particularly about young adults aged 18ndash45 years two major studies were launched to determine the underlying causes of sudden deaths post-COVID. Both studies one retrospective and the other prospective focused on scientific evaluation and field data from across the country.
Whatrsquos The First Study Found?
The first a multi-centre case-control study titled lsquoFactors Associated with Unexplained Sudden Deaths among Adults aged 18ndash45 Years in Indiarsquo was conducted by ICMRrsquos National Institute of Epidemiology between May and August 2023.
It spanned 47 hospitals across 19 states and UTs reviewing deaths reported from October 2021 to March 2023. The findings clearly ruled out any causal connection between COVID-19 vaccines and sudden adult deaths.
The Second Study on Cardiac Deaths
The second ongoing study lsquoEstablishing the Cause in Sudden Unexplained Deaths in Youngrsquo is being led by AIIMS New Delhi in collaboration with ICMR. Preliminary data point to heart attacks myocardial infarction and genetic mutations as leading causes. Notably no major shifts have been observed in causes of death compared to previous years.
Researchers emphasize that sudden cardiac deaths typically stem from pre-existing health conditions genetic vulnerabilities and unhealthy lifestyle choices not vaccination. Experts warned that speculation linking vaccines to such deaths lacks scientific grounding and can seriously damage public trust in life-saving immunization programmes.
ldquoThe data speaks for itself- vaccines are safe. Misinformation can lead to vaccine hesitancy which poses a greater public health threatrdquo stated an official from the Health Ministry.
Both ICMR and AIIMS affirm that COVID-19 vaccines deployed in India remain safe and effective with serious adverse events being extremely rare. The Government of India continues to prioritise evidence-based research to guide public health decisions and combat misinformation an official release read.
As final results from the ongoing AIIMS study are awaited health experts urge citizens to remain vigilant about their health and to rely on verified scientific information.
