'No pay' parking to tackle 'lawlessness' at famed Welsh beach and forest
@Source: walesonline.co.uk
A cutting-edge barrier less parking scheme is set to be rolled out at a renowned Anglesey beach to tackle escalating illegal camping problems. The woodland behind Traeth Llanddwyn faces "significant" danger from unauthorised campfires and prohibited barbecues. Rangers monitoring the location do everything possible to disperse wild camping groups despite facing "abuse and threats". Although BBQs are forbidden in the vicinity, flames erupted in Newborough forest last week when campers ignited parched pine needles. The 2,500-acre woodland forms part of a National Reserve, with fears that a substantial blaze could destroy local wildlife, including red squirrels, reports North Wales Live . Locals in the neighbouring village of Newborough say the forest has turned "lawless" and fear an uncontrolled fire could endanger nearby properties. See our Privacy Notice Harsh new parking fees were brought in during May at the reserve, which gained popularity on social media after featuring in the television series House of the Dragon. This measure aimed to reduce visitor numbers and provide respite to a village frequently paralysed by cars queuing to access the sandy shoreline and its famous island. Site operator Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is now preparing to install a fresh Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) parking system later this year. It will function similarly to the pay-later barrierless systems at Mersey Gateway Bridge and Manchester Airport. This approach will enable NRW to spot vehicles staying overnight and therefore allow the environmental organisation to tackle wild camping. A barrier will remain on the exit route – not for charges but to manage traffic movement through the village. A spokesperson explained: "The new system will provide CCTV which will assist with reporting and investigating anti-social behaviour. It will allow us to monitor and issue fines for those parking overnight in our car parks. "Overnight camping remains prohibited and during this summer we have increased patrols and responded to a number of call-outs from the public to deal with illegal camping." Residents have been highlighting Llanddwyn's "selfish and incredibly dangerous" campers for quite some time, demanding more ranger patrols and hefty on-the-spot penalties. Some holidaymakers pitch up on the shore or in the car park, whilst many erect tents between trees within the woodland itself. Last year's uncontrolled blaze wasn't the first this summer. "If it carries on, we won't have a forest," warned a concerned local online. Another commented: "I hate going down first thing in the morning because you see are the entitled campers and I get so angry." He's not alone in his frustration. "Car park rammed with over-nighters again!" groaned a resident this week. Partly tongue-in-cheek, some locals have discussed taking matters into their own hands – one suggestion involved playing loud music in the woodland throughout the night to put off campers. NRW wardens – frequently locals themselves – face the danger of patrolling the woodland during nighttime hours. A local resident who chatted with them explained: "I'm sure the rangers would prefer to be at home with their families rather than spending the night in the forest worrying about the forest getting burned down and risking abuse or being assaulted. "Would you want to confront a bunch of pi**ed-up idiots late at night?" Following parking in one of three car parks within the woodland, visitors presently pay up to £15 per day at exit barriers on the reserve's perimeter. This arrangement not only fails to detect overnight visitors, but the barrier can break down. Sometimes, height barriers intended to discourage motorhomes are damaged by motorists, typically through carelessness rather than deliberate vandalism. NRW is apparently holding off until the hectic summer period concludes before fitting its new cameras to avoid potential initial difficulties. Not everyone believes they'll prove effective. A local said not all campers park within the reserve boundaries, opting instead for locations in and around the village. Last weekend he noted: "On Saturday evening we saw people walking (into the forest) with camping gear." For years the primary beach car park at Llanddwyn featured a designated barbecue zone. This summer the amenity was shut down and substituted with a picnic area, consistent with a broader barbecue prohibition across the reserve. Residents believe it has worsened the situation, prompting campers to ignite BBQs on the shoreline and within woodland areas instead. On Thursday (August 14) NRW was compelled to release the latest in a series of safety warnings on social media. These reminded visitors there is now a "full ban in place for all barbecues and fires following a rise in fire-related incidents". NRW has yet to announce a date for the barrierless ANPR cameras. A spokesperson said: "The new system will enable users to manage car park payments via an app, as well as handle season tickets and registration for local users. "Barrierless entry systems provide easier access for emergency vehicles and help reduce the technical issues we have experienced with our current system. "There will be an exit barrier to help manage traffic flow back into the village. We will monitor any changes resulting from the new system and assess how it impacts traffic in the village."
