Griffith University, with campuses at South Bank, the Gold Coast, Nathan and Mount Gravatt, is responsible for the conservation management of almost 182 hectares of native and regenerating forests, and 15 hectares of regionally themed gardens. There are so many wildlife species – more than 1800 species of plants and animals, like frogs, the glossy-black cockatoo, grey-headed flying fox, short-beaked echidna, owls, greater glider, and koalas – that a visit is almost like a trip to a zoo. It has 40 species of mammals, 162 bird species, 33 reptiles, 17 amphibians, 11 fish and 475 invertebrates and the uni boasts it is the “easiest place to see koalas in the wild in Brisbane” – no doubt a welcome bonus for domestic and international students. For those not squeamish about creepy-crawlies, Griffith is in the top 9 per cent of tertiary campuses in the world for arthropods – insects and spiders – and in the top 7 per cent for birds.
