The Flames have said they are not in a cold sweat over South Africa’s move to beef up their squad with six more players ahead of tomorrow’s Africa Nations Championship (Chan) final qualification round second leg against South Africa at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
The Malawi National Football Team, which arrived in Johannesburg yesterday morning, goes into tomorrow’s showdown with a spring in their step, having won the first leg 1-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe last Saturday. This may have prompted Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki to beef up his squad with six more players.
In an interview yesterday, Flames assistant coach Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda said they are focusing more on their preparations than being bothered by their opponents.
He said: “If they have beefed up their squad, well and good. It shows they have some respect for us, but we are not taking it lying down.
“We know it’s going to be tough because we aren’t in the comfort zone, but it’s doable. We are exercising a lot of caution. The guys are prepared to give their all.”
On his part, coach Kallisto Pasuwa said they have intensified their preparations for the match.
“ [The only setback is that] midfielder Zebron Kalima suffered a knock on Wednesday and he is definitely out, but the rest of the guys are OK and the morale is good, the goal we scored gave us motivation.”
He also reiterated that the battle is not over yet.
“As I said, it’s only first half and we are going into the second half and we have been drumming into the guys that it’s not yet done until it is done,” said the Zimbabwean tactician.
The former Zimbabwe National Football Team and Dynamos FC coach also said their approach will not be defensive.
“We also need to attack [because] the best way to defend is to attack,” said Pasuwa.
The Flames had their first training session in the rainbow nation yesterday afternoon.
Meanwhile, South Africa gaffer Ntseki has hailed South African Premier Soccer League clubs for releasing key players ahead of the decisive match.
He said the six have injected fresh impetus into the Bafana squad as they aim to overturn a 1-0 deficit.
On Thursday afternoon, Ntseki welcomed top players such as Mamelodi Sundowns star Neo Maema, Ndumulelo Maphangule, Victor Letsoalo, Siyanda Msani, Simon Ramabu and Kamogelo Sebelebele, who were unavailable for the first leg due to club commitments.
Ntseki added that since clubs have availed their players, he has a stronger and balanced squad at his disposal.
