No toll for two-wheelers on national highways, rules clarify
@Source: newskarnataka.com
New Delhi – The government has officially clarified that two-wheelers remain exempt from toll charges at all NHAI-managed national highways and expressways, citing the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. Rulebook makes toll exemption clear As per Rule 4(4) of the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, no toll is levied on two-wheelers, three-wheelers, tractors, combine harvesters or animal-drawn vehicles using national highways, bypasses, tunnels, or permanent bridges. These vehicles only face toll if they use the main carriageway despite an available service road or alternative route; even then, the charge is capped at 50 per cent of the fee applicable to cars. Government steps in to bust myths Confusion had arisen due to viral social-media posts suggesting upcoming toll charges for two-wheelers. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, along with NHAI, firmly described these claims as fake news, confirming that no toll plan exists for two-wheelers. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also weighed in, clarifying that two-wheelers will continue to be toll-free, dismissing rumours as baseless. Where charges may still apply Some toll collection practices remain valid on roads not governed by NHAI rules, such as the Yamuna Expressway, which is managed by the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). Users should note that such expressways may impose tolls on two-wheelers as per their own regulations. National law under the 2008 Rules clearly exempts two-wheelers from tolls on NHAI-managed roads. Government clarification aims to reassure the public amid misinformation. Commuters on privately managed expressways should however verify applicable rules before travel.
