No YSR name on renovated cricket stadium sparks controversy
@Source: thehindu.com
Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in Visakhapatnam, a controversy is brewing as the name of former Chief Minister the late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was found missing from the PM Palem Stadium. The stadium is named after Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy. The stadium, usually called Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA VDCA Stadium, has been renovated for the upcoming IPL matches. However, the name of Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy was missing from the arch and main stadium building, which now reads ‘ACA VDCA International Cricket Stadium’. YSRCP leaders, who slammed the move, have decided to stage a protest in front of the stadium on March 20. Former Minister Gudivada Amarnath criticised the NDA government alleging that it is trying to systematically erase the legacy of Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy. He demanded that the government and Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) reverse the renaming of the Visakhapatnam VDCA Cricket Stadium. The YSRCP Visakhapatnam president also accused the government of prioritising the elimination of the YSRCP and YSR brand over election promises. He added that YSR’s statues were demolished at various places like Nagarjuna University and Vemuru (Bapatla), while the YSR name was removed from Visakhapatnam stadium, Sitakonda’s viewpoint and Rythu Bharosa Kendras among others. The government may try to remove YSR from structures, but his legacy endures in people’s hearts, he said. He also pointed out that while N. Chandrababu Naidu failed to name Krishna district after the TDP Founder, former Chief Minister the late N.T. Rama Rao, in three terms, former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy did it. Though no ACA official has commented on the development, sources from the ACA said no such policy decision was made and that it could be a painting error.
