Northern Irish star banks double Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry after ignoring Masters winner

Tom McKibbin bagged over €100,000 at LIV Golf Mexico City, earning more than double what Rory McIlroy did this weekend having ignored the Masters winner's advice.
Belfast's McKibbin, who only turned professional in 2021, quickly made a name for himself on the European Tour, clinching the Porsche European Open in 2023. A year later, his 18th-place seasonal finish opened up an opportunity to play alongside fellow Northern Irishman McIlroy on the PGA Tour.
However, LIV were also keen to secure his services, and that's exactly where McKibbin ended up, despite McIlroy reportedly advising him against joining the Saudi-backed tour. This weekend, McKibbin played at Club de Golf Chapultepec, finishing T34 on two-over and pocketing around €120k - while Masters winner McIlroy's 12th-placed Zurich Classic of New Orleans finish with PGA partner Shane Lowry saw him take home less than half of that amount.
Chile's Joaquin Niemann continued his dominance on the LIV circuit in Mexico, winning his third individual event in just six starts and taking home the top prize of €3.5 million on -16 - 18 shots ahead of 22-year-old McKibbin.
However, thanks to Legion XIII team-mates Jon Rahm, who finished on -12, Tyrrell Hatton, who finished on -11, and Caleb Surratt, who finished on -7, McKibbin's group celebrated winning the team title in Mexico City and a whopping €2.6m prize, reports Belfast Live.
McKibbin's payday has hit a whopping €120k, and that's not all - he's also pocketing a share of a hefty prize pot, which has him raking in more than McIlroy and Lowry after their strong performance in Louisiana.
The Ryder Cup peers teamed up with hopes to keep hold of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans title, a PGA Tour team event, and they put on quite the show.
Despite being in the mix as the weekend reached its peak, a final round 72 left them tied for 12th, six shots behind winners Andrew Novak and Ben Griffin, bagging €60k apiece.
Even though McKibbin had a less than stellar showing at the LIV event, he still pocketed over twice what McIlroy did, despite the latter having a much better weekend.
McKibbin, who sharpened his skills at the same Holywood Golf Club where McIlroy started out, opened up about his chats with the superstar and why he decided to ignore McIlroy's advice against joining the PGA Tour.
"It was definitely in my mind, but to me I wasn't in any of [the majors or Ryder Cup] anyway," McKibbin said, recalling his conversation with McIlroy right after getting an offer from LIV.
"The opportunity to play with these guys out here more often and more consistently was definitely a huge factor. I'm not in those majors anyway at the minute so that really didn't bother me too much.
"Being young and 22 I've watched this last couple years since [LIV] started. It's something I really like to watch. Something very different. It appeals to more people my age.
"The opportunity to learn from some of the best players in the world week in, week out is something that appealed very nicely to me. I liked the whole concept of everything."
