Two years after being away from Team India, Cheteshwar Pujara announced his retirement from Indian cricket on Sunday (August 24). The India legend last represented the country in the 2023 World Test Championship final. He did play domestic cricket, but his absence from back-to-back Duleep Trophies confirmed that he wasn't in the scheme of things. The Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee picked the squad for the 2024/25 Duleep Trophy. Pujara ended his career with 103 Test caps. He scored 7195 runs in the format. His tally includes 19 centuries and 35 fifties. Pujara used to bat at number 3, and he often shared partnerships with one of the openers after India lost the first wicket. Speaking to India Today, Pujara heaped praise on Murali Vijay and picked him as one of the best openers he has seen. Vijay played 61 Tests, 17 ODIs and 9 T20Is. He played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for many years but was part of the side when Pujara joined the Yellow Army in 2021. "Murali Vijay, again an exceptional opener, I think one of the best openers I have played my cricket with because if you are a number three player you want the best opener out there. I have had a lot of great partnerships with Vijay and he is also one of the best Test openers I have seen," Pujara said. Vijay last played for part of Team India in the 2018/19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He retired in 2023. Vijay also excelled in IPL and scored 2619 runs in 106 matches. While Pujara has retired from international cricket, he could be seen in action in any league. In his retirement note, Pujara clearly mentioned that he retired from Indian cricket. Many legends, including Sachin Tendulkar, have played different leagues since their retirements and Pujara could join them soon.
