Not Muralitharan Or Anderson! Adam Gilchrist Names 31-Year-Old Indian Star As 'Bowling Equivalent Of Don Bradman'
@Source: timesnownews.com
Australian cricket legend Adam Gilchrist reserved the ultimate praise for the Indian cricket superstar and named him as the bowling equivalent of Sir Donald Bradman, who is widely regarded as the greatest batter to ever play the game due to his extraordinary record. Bradman, who played for Australia between 1928 and 1948 and featured in 52 Test matches for Australia in which he made 6996 runs with 6996 runs with 29 centuries to his name. For context, no other batter in Test cricket history, who has played more than two matches or scored more than 144 runs in his career, has a better average. While over the years, several greats of the game have come and upstaged Bradman's run and centuries tally, no one has come close to his remarkable average, which remains the holy grail of Test cricket and something that is unlikely to be matched or bettered in the longest format. While Bradman sets the standard in batting, who is his equivalent in the bowling department? Gilchrist picked Jasprit Bumrah and pointed out his remarkable numbers, which are far above his peers. The three-time World Cup-winner claimed he was in awe of watching Bumrah against Australia in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and labelled him as the greatest fast-bowler of all time. "He's maybe the best bowler, fast bowler of all time. When you start stacking up the statistics and the varying conditions that he has to go out and execute those skills in, I guess you look at Sir Donald Bradman's numbers compared to his peers and he's just so far ahead, so I think Bumrah is sort of in that category across all the different variations that you get in conditions and pitches that you've got to bowl on. He's significantly further ahead than the peers around him, so that tells you we are truly watching greatness," said Gilchrist on Cricbuzz. "A seamer from India, consistently throughout, particularly the series that we just saw in the summer, back home in the Australian summer, no, I don't think so. We just sat and watched in awe at close range commentating on that series and again, I know it's a different format, but he is the best all-format bowler; that's nothing to argue there," Gilchrist added. With 205 Test wickets in 45 matches, Bumrah is far behind James Anderson (704) and Muttiah Muralitharan (800) as the highest wicket-takers among pacers and overall in Test cricket history. However, his bowling average of 19.40 is the best among bowlers with more than 200 scalps. He also has 149 ODI, 89 T20I, and 167 IPL wickets to his name in his career as he continued to dominate all three formats.
