Not Playing Kuldeep Yadav Hurting India? 'He's In Top Form, Can't Expect Him To Score 100'

With the series on the line, is this the right time to include Kuldeep Yadav in India’s playing XI for the must-win fourth Test at Manchester? Is Kuldeep’s childhood coach Kapil Yadav is to be believed, then yes. The left-arm wristspinner has been consigned to the bench in the first three Tests of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England which India now trail 1-2. The Shubman Gill-led and Gautam Gambhir coached visitors have preferred Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to look after the spin department. While Kapil feels that with India doing well, Kuldeep’s including doesn’t some to be a big concern right now but does add that the team is getting hurt by not using the spinner at the right team given he’s in top form. “Kuldeep not playing doesn’t seem to hold much value in the current context, because Team India has been playing well. In the third Test, many expected him to feature, but the fast bowlers did the job and picked up wickets,” Kapil told news agency IANS. “Kuldeep Yadav is in top form right now. He was lethal during the ODI World Cup and bowled brilliantly throughout the tournament. Not playing him at the right moments has cost India heavily. In the recent matches, it’s the batters who have failed, not the bowlers,” he added. While Kuldeep has been a regular feature in India’s white-ball teams, he continues to be behind in the pecking order when it comes to Test cricket. Since making his debut in March 2017, he has managed to play in just 13 Tests but his record in them has been more then impressive: 56 wickets at 22.16 and four five-wicket hauls. With India aiming for more depth in their batting order by packing it with allrounders ahead of specialist bowlers, Kapil said, “You can’t expect someone like Kuldeep or even Bumrah to score 100 runs – that would be unrealistic.” Kapil said he has spoken to Kuldeep and asked him to be ready to step up whenever the opportunity comes his way. “I’ve spoken to Kuldeep recently, and I told him to stay fit and be ready to deliver whenever given a chance. All we can do is hope – the final decision lies with the coach and the captain. But there’s no doubt that Kuldeep is currently one of the finest and most senior spinners in the country,” he said. “Yes, his morale is high, but deep down he must also be wondering when he’ll get his chance – after all, he’s only human. He can be a crucial asset for Team India in Manchester. I spoke to him; he’s focused,” he added.
