Scott Sorensen Your say – Knights or Panthers Cleary set to haunt the Knights again By Robert Dillon He’s been a dominant force in the NRL for the best part of a decade, and there is no team Nathan Cleary has dominated more ruthlessly than the Newcastle Knights. For whatever reason, Cleary seems to have a knack of producing special efforts even by his illustrious standards against the Novocastrians, and few would bet against that trend continuing at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday night. In 10 games against Newcastle, dating back to his debut season in 2016, the champion halfback has delivered nine victories, many of them by landslide margins (31-10 average scoreline). His only loss against Newcastle came almost seven years ago. That gives Cleary a 90 per cent success rate against the Knights – his best against any opposition, and significantly higher than his overall career winning percentage (70.59). In those fixtures, he has contributed a personal tally of 130 points from seven tries, 50 goals and two field goals. The only team against whom he has scored more heavily is Parramatta, but his 133 points against the Eels have come from 19 games – almost twice as many as he has played against the Knights. First up, the resurgent Panthers – on the back of eight straight wins, the latest a controversial four-point victory over the Gold Coast – take on the Knights in Newcastle. Penrith have already risen from dead last to fifth on the NRL ladder, and can jump the Warriors and move into the top four (at least temporarily) with a win tonight. Newcastle meanwhile have Bradman Best back in the side while Jake Arthur joins Jack Cogger in their team’s latest new halves combination. Robert Dillon is our man on the ground in Newcastle. Then Billie Eder will report in on Canberra’s clash with the Sea Eagles, who sit one win outside the top eight. Manly have shifted Tom Trbojevic back from centre to fullback this week, in place of Lehi Hopoate who has a shoulder injury.
