NRL stars boost Hiri schools league

SCHOOLS’ participating in the Hiri LLG competition in the Central Province were graced by the presence of three NRL stars during the Pawa Rugby League Clinic conducted in Boera village on Monday. PNG Kumul and South Sydney Rabbitohs Alex Johnson, former Parramatta Eels Shaun Lane, and Bulldogs Billy Tsikrikas inspired the students with their inspirational speeches. They also assisted in the coaching clinic conducted by the PNG NRL in coordination with the Gas Resource Central Dabaris franchise. Major sponsor Lae Biscuits Company, was also promoting it’s new products in the Lewa Energy Biscuit and Pawa Energy Drink with its brand ambassador Alex Johnston, that coincided with the clinic program. The schools participating in the Hiri West School Rugby League are Roku, Kouderika, Porebada, Boera, Papa and Lealea primary schools, and three high schools in Redscar, Papa Junior High and Lealea Junior High. The schools have so far completed their five rounds of competition with the finals set for next month. School League chairman Igo Gaudi extended his gratitude to the sponsors for making the event successful. He said the Hiri West Schools Rugby League Competition is aimed at promoting sport amongst school-aged children. Gaudi commanded the efforts by PNGNRL and the Central Dabaris franchise for creating a pathway for the league to progress at an early stage amongst the students. He said the competition has enhanced their skills, teamwork and sportsmanship amongst young players. Gaudi said despite the challenges in logistics, facilities, and funding, its positive impact on the students in their schools and community was immense. “At the end of the day it’s all about giving our young players a chance to learn the basics, develop new skills, and experience the joy of the sport in a safe , supportive environment,”
