British-Nigerian shape-shifting singer Obongjayar has worked alongside some of the coolest names in music, including Fred Again, Little Simz, and Danny Brown. Lately, though, he’s been building a world all his own, culminating in his second studio album, Paradise Now, out May 30. His latest single, “Sweet Danger,” is a new peek into the album, following the singles “Not in Surrender” and “Just My Luck.” “Sweet Danger” plays like a cross between a Spaghetti Western theme and an Afrobeat throwback, where Obongjayar leans into his villain era. In the video, he and an eclectic cast of characters fill what looks like a nondescript motel. “Only one night/Can’t stay, I’ll be gone by tomorrow,” Obonjayar promises while slapping the rear of the mechanical bull stationed in a conference room that many of the guests ride. Baby, did you not know I’m a singer?/I’m a wild boy/Baby, I am trouble.” According to a press release, Paradise Now was recorded between London and LA with producers like Kwes Darko (Pa Salieu), Yeti Beats (Doja Cat), and Beach Noise (Kendrick Lamar, Baby Keem). Little Simz is the only named feature on the 15-song tracklist. Obongjayar’s style dances between electronic, soul, pop, afro-beat, and more. Last summer, he brought Paradise Now to life as an intimate party series at London art and music venue Ormside Projects. Attendees and performers included Simz, Pa Salieu, and Kwes Darko. He plans to throw another one next month. Then, in the fall, Obongjayar will tour the U.K. and Europe, with shows in Berlin, Cologne, Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester and London.
