Ohio lawmakers urge NASA to move headquarters to ‘ideal’ Cleveland location

“Given that very few NASA HQ employees currently work in-office, consolidating operations near an existing NASA field center would streamline agency functions while ensuring continued access to necessary infrastructure,” the two lawmakers stated. “NASA Glenn Research Center and its Lewis Field site at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport offer extensive office space and redevelopment opportunities, making them ideal locations to accommodate NASA HQ operations.”

Another major benefit of moving NASA headquarters to Cleveland is the “substantial savings for taxpayers,” as Cleveland would be a far cheaper location compared to Washington, according to the lawmakers.
Numerous other Ohio lawmakers, including Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) and Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Mike Turner (R-OH), and Dave Joyce (R-OH) have also signed the letter.
NASA announced in a memo to staff on Monday that it will close three of its offices, the Office of Technology, Policy and Strategy, the Office of the Chief Scientist, and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility branch, in response to the Trump administration’s effort to downsize the government. The agency also laid off around 23 of its employees.

The requested move of NASA headquarters to Cleveland comes ahead of the state’s gubernatorial election next year, in which 2024 presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is running as a Republican. In announcing his candidacy last month, Ramaswamy expressed interest in making Ohio “the state of excellence.”
Besides Ramaswamy, Ohio Attorney General David Yost is also running for the governor’s mansion in 2026. Yost has prioritized efforts to downsize the government in the past, claiming last month that he was “DOGE before DOGE was cool.”
