OHSAA softball preview 2025: Cleveland.com Preseason All-Stars, top players

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Nineteen Northeast Ohio players earned a spot on one of the two All-Ohio teams or honorable mention last season in softball, as named by the Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association. Of those players, 10 have graduated, including four of the seven who were named first-team All-Ohio: pitchers Natalie Susa (Walsh Jesuit), Anna Wise (Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and McKenna Metzger (Aurora) and outfielder Destiny Ruggiero (Akron Springfield). While those four are off starting their Division I college careers — Susa at Minnesota, Metzger at Coastal Carolina, Wise at Ohio University and Ruggiero at Cleveland State — the other three first-team All-Ohio recipients return: catchers Caleigh Shaulis at Walsh Jesuit and Sophie Schechterman at Aurora, and outfielder Morgan Muncy for Southeast. That trio leads the 2025 cleveland.com Preseason All-Star softball team: Rachel Baker, Manchester Year: Senior About Baker: Baker was one of the more prominent strikeout pitchers in Ohio last season, fanning 236 hitters in 128 innings pitched. She finished the season 18-4 with a 1.75 ERA. Maddie Burge, Field Year: Senior About Burge: Was named honorable mention All-Ohio last season when she went 19-2 with a 2.12 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 112.1 innings pitched. Lilly Young, Buckeye Year: Sophomore About Young: As a freshman, Young led the Bucks to a regional championship game appearance by going 12-4 with a 1.68 ERA and 182 strikeouts in 104 1/3 innings pitched and was named second-team All-Ohio. Honorable mention: Alexa Anderson, Chardon, so.; Naomi Bottomlee, North Ridgeville, jr.; Clara Granchi, Riverside, jr.; Karina Shuster, Amherst, so. Sophie Schechterman, Aurora Year: Senior About Schechterman: Was named first-team All-Ohio last season when she hit .543, with 11 doubles and 30 RBIs. Behind the dish, she handled Metzger, who set a single-season program record with 20 wins. Caleigh Shaulis, Walsh Jesuit Year: Senior About Shaulis: A first-team All-Ohio selection, the Kent State commit hit .569 with two home runs and 27 RBI last year while finishing with a .996 fielding percentage behind the dish. Honorable mention: Abby Gray, Cloverleaf, jr.; Emi Jeras, Riverside, sr.; Brielle Raus, North Royalton, sr.; Ally Williams, Berea-Midpark, sr. Ryann Allar, Medina, Year: Junior About Allar: Was named second-team All-Ohio last season after leading the Bees in multiple offensive categories, including batting average (.592), on-base percentage (.656), slugging percentage (.859), hits (42), doubles (12), RBIs (30), runs (33) and walks (16) as Medina went 19-6. McKayla McGee, Walsh Jesuit Year: Senior About McGee: The University of Akron commit hit .485 and led the team with eight home runs and 38 RBI last season. She scored 16 runs and defensively posted a .885 fielding percentage. With the departure of Susa, she will likely step into the circle for the warriors this season, as she replaced Susa in 2023 when Susa missed time with injury. Sophie Retton, Aurora Year: Senior About Retton: She hit .605 with four home runs and 41 RBI last season in being named honorable mention All-Ohio. With Metzger now at Coastal Carolina, the University of Findlay commit will step into the circle to pitch for the Greenmen. Gianna Roth, Brecksville-Broadview Heights Year: Senior About Roth: The third baseman hit .475 and led the team with 30 runs scored last season while stealing 16 bases. She also drove in 20 runs for the Bees. Honorable mention: Brae Boguski, Padua, sr.; Hannah Brooks, Elyria Catholic, sr.; McKenna Dorobek, Amherst, jr.; Grace Forgach, Berea-Midpark, sr.; Alyssa Hallis, Crestwood, sr.; Kayleigh Helm, Crestwood, sr.; Paige Kelley, Revere, sr.; Larken Koran, Nordonia, sr. Outfielders Jessica Conner, Elyria Catholic Year: Sophomore About Connor: She hit .588 with five home runs and 40 RBI as a freshman last season in being named second-team All-Ohio. Ella Girard, Walsh Jesuit Year: Junior About Girard: The Michigan State commit hit .451 and was a perfect 20 for 20 on stolen bases during the season for the Warriors last season. She was even better in the postseason, hitting .692 with a .643 on-base percentage and five stolen bases as Walsh advanced to the regional final. Ava Gundling, Gilmour Academy Year: Senior About Gundling: The University of Maryland commit was last season’s Cuyahoga County Coaches Association Player of the Year when she hit 564 with nine homers, five doubles and a triple and drove in 39 runs. Morgan Muncy, Southeast Year: Junior About Muncy: The Miami University commit set a new Southeast single-season batting average record for the second straight season, hitting .623 as a sophomore on her way to being named first-team All-Ohio. Rowan Weber, Brecksville-Broadview Hts. Year: Junior About Weber: Smacked eight homers and drove in 21 runs while hitting .471 last season for a Bees squad that went 21-5 and made the regional semifinals. She was named honorable mention All-Ohio in Division I. Honorable mention: Lauren Fischer, Avon, sr.; Riley Ford, Chardon, sr.; Amelia Holbrook, Avon, sr.; Brooke Largent, Olmsted Falls, jr.; Avery Qualters, Aurora, sr.
