Older drivers who hit age 70 could face new law which 'cannot wait'

There are calls for all drivers who hit a milestone age to face a " mandatory test" for all drivers over 70 . James Luckhurst, head of road safety at GEM Motoring Assist, said that "mandatory eye tests need to be introduced” in the UK. James said: “Mandatory eye tests need to be introduced for everyone at the time of licence renewal. Optometrists should report results directly to the DVLA. But we can’t wait for changes in the law, so let’s also encourage everyone to seek a driver MOT of some sort at licence renewal time. “Let’s also support initiatives to raise public awareness about the critical role of vision in safe driving, and remind everyone aged over 60 that a great place to start is with a FREE eye test. Finally, let’s make clear that this has nothing to do with restricting freedom. But some drivers are unwilling to notify the DVLA about problems with their vision, whilst others fall below the required standards without realising, because their vision has changed since they passed their driving test. With more than one in three of those surveyed reporting they’d seen a patient in the past month with vision below the driving standard, yet continuing to drive, many felt there was a need for more stringent rules. Nine in 10 respondents concluded that the current sight requirements for a driving licence are insufficient and the same amount called for regular sight tests for all drivers. Gillian Jones - whose father Ambrose Skingle was killed by a motorist who lied about their eyesight to renew their driving licence - said: "I have two sons and my father was a big part of their lives. "Dad taught them how to ride bikes and play golf. We had a family dinner together every Sunday. Life has never been the same. It was as if the centre of our lives had been ripped out. "I know some people don’t want to have a sight test because they don’t want the bad news that they have to stop driving. "I'd like them to think of the consequences, both to themselves and to others. I think most people would feel awful knowing they were responsible for taking a life… People have got to look at the bigger picture."
